Parking Brake Inspection
Frequent inhalation of brake pad dust, regardless of material composition, could be hazardous to your health.

| 1. | Raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper location. Remove the rear wheels. |
| 2. | Release the parking brake, and remove the rear brake caliper and brake disc/drum. 16 x 1.5 mm 140 N·m (14.3 kgf·m, 103 lbf·ft)6 x 1.0 mm 11 N·m (1.1 kgf·m, 8 lbf·ft)TENSION PINSFLANGE NUTS 10 x 1.25 mm 38 N·m (3.9 kgf·m, 28 lbf·ft)BACKING PLATE Marked left and right.UPPER RETURN SPRINGS Check for weakness and damage.BRAKE SHOES If brake shoes are to be reused, mark and reassemble in their original position.CONNECTING RODADJUSTER ASSEMBLY Check ratchet teeth for wear and damage.LOWER RETURN SPRING Check for weakness and damage.RETAINER SPRINGS Install securely on tension pin.PIVOT PINROD SPRING Check for weakness and damage.PARKING BRAKE LEVER Marked left and right.WAVE WASHERU-CLIP Replace.ANCHOR BOLT |
| 3. | Check the parking brake linings (A) for cracking, glazing, wear, and contamination. |
| 4. | Measure the parking brake lining thickness (B). Measurement does not include brake shoe thickness.

| 5. | If the brake lining thickness is less than the service limit, replace all the parking brake shoes as a set. |
| 6. | Check the bearings in the hub unit for smooth operation. |
| 7. | Measure the inside diameter of the parking brake drum with inside vernier calipers.

| 8. | If the inside diameter of the parking brake drum is more than service limit, replace the rear brake disc/drum. |
| 9. | Check the parking brake drum for scoring, grooves, and cracks. |
