Rear Damper Replacement

Inspection

1.	Push on the damper by hand as shown.

2.	Check for smooth operation through a full stroke, both compression and extension. The damper should extend in a smooth, continuous motion when the compression is released. If it does not (no compression or no extension), the gas is leaking, and the damper should be replaced.

3.	Check for oil leaks, abnormal noises, or binding during these tests.

Removal

1.	Raise the rear of the vehicle, and make sure it is securely supported.

2.	Remove the rear wheels.

3.	Place a floor jack under of the rear axle beam, and support the rear suspension by raising the jack.

4.	Remove the flange bolt (A) from the bottom of the damper.   A 10 x 1.25 mm

5.	Remove the lid on the trunk side trim.

6.	Hold the damper shaft (A) with a hex wrench (B), and loosen the 10 mm flange nut.   CDAB10 x 1.25 mm

7.	Remove the 10 mm flange nut, damper mounting washer (C) and damper mounting rubber (D) from the top of the damper.

8.	Compress the damper unit, and remove it from the body.

Installation

1.	Install the bump stop rubber (A) onto the damper unit. Position the damper assembly between the body and rear axle beam.   A

2.	Place a floor jack under of the rear axle beam, and support the rear suspension by raising the jack.

3.	Install the damper mounting rubber (A) and damper mounting washer (B) on the damper shaft, and lightly install the 10 mm flange nut. Note the washer and rubber installation direction.   10 x 1.25 mmBA

4.	Loosely install the flange bolt on the bottom of the damper.   10 x 1.25 mm 54 N·m (5.5 kgf·m, 40 lbf·ft)

5.	Raise the suspension with a floor jack to load the vehicle weight, and tighten the flange bolt.

6.	Tighten the 10 mm flange nut to the specified torque values while holding the damper shaft (A) with a hex wrench (B).   10 x 1.25 mm 29 N·m (3.0 kgf·m, 22 lbf·ft)AB

7.	Reinstall the lid on the trunk side trim.

8.	Install the rear wheels.
