1. INSTALL TIMING BELT
  1. Check the No. 1 and No. 2 belt idlers.

    1. Visually check the seal portion of the idler pulley for oil leakage.

      1. If leakage is found, replace the idler.

    2. Check that the idler turns smoothly.

      1. If necessary, replace the idler.

  1. Check the water pump.

    1. Visually check the air hole and water hole for coolant leakage.

      1. If leakage is found, replace the water pump and belt.

    2. Turn the pulley, and check that the water pump bearing moves smoothly and quietly.

      1. If necessary, replace the water pump.

  1. Remove any oil or water on the crankshaft, oil pump pulley, water pump pulley, No. 1 and No. 2 idler. Keep them clean.

    NOTICE:
    Only wipe the pulleys. Do not use any cleansing agents on the pulleys.



  1. Set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC/compression.

    1. Turn the hexagon head portion of the camshaft to align the timing marks of the camshaft timing pulleys and timing belt plates.

      HINT:
      A054464E01
      Turn the camshaft timing pulleys slightly clockwise to make installation of the timing belt easier.

      Camshaft timing pulley of LH bank:
      1/2 of a tooth

      Camshaft timing pulley of RH bank:
      1 tooth

    3. Using the crankshaft damper bolt, turn the crankshaft to align the timing marks of the crankshaft timing pulley and oil pump body.

    5. Remove any oil or water on each pulley. Keep them clean.

      NOTICE:
      Only wipe the pulleys. Do not use cleaning agents on the pulleys.

    6. Face the front mark (arrow) on the belt forward.

    7. Connect the belt to the crankshaft timing pulley. Align the installation mark on the belt with the timing mark of the crankshaft timing pulley.

    8. Connect the belt to the No. 2 idler.

    9. Connect the belt to the camshaft timing pulley (LH bank). Align the installation mark on the belt with the timing mark of the camshaft timing pulley.

    10. Connect the belt to the water pump pulley.

    11. Connect the belt to the camshaft timing pulley (RH bank). Align the installation mark on the belt with the timing mark of the camshaft timing pulley.

    12. Connect the timing belt to the No. 1 idler.

  1. Set the belt tensioner.

    1. Using a press, slowly press in the push rod using 981 to 9,807 N (100 to 1,000 kgf, 220 to 2,205 lbf) of pressure.

    2. Align the holes of the push rod and housing. Pass a 1.27 mm hexagon wrench through the holes to keep the setting position of the push rod.

    3. Release the press.

    4. Install the dust boot to the belt tensioner.

  1. Install the belt tensioner.

    1. Temporarily install the belt tensioner with the 2 bolts.

    2. Alternately tighten the 2 bolts.

      Torque:
      26 N*m{ 265 kgf*cm , 19 ft.*lbf }

    3. Using pliers, remove the 1.27 mm hexagon wrench from the belt tensioner.

  1. Check the valve timing.

    1. Using the crankshaft damper bolt, slowly turn the crankshaft timing pulley 2 revolutions from TDC to TDC.

      NOTICE:
      Always turn the crankshaft pulley clockwise.

    3. Check that each pulley aligns with the timing marks as shown in the illustration.

      1. If the pulley and timing marks do not align, remove the belt and reinstall it.

    4. Remove the crankshaft damper bolt.



2. INSTALL NO. 1 CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR PLATE

  1. Install the sensor plate as shown in the illustration.

    NOTICE:
    Be careful of the installation direction.



3. INSTALL NO. 1 TIMING BELT COVER
  1. Install the timing belt cover with the 4 bolts.

    Torque:
    7.5 N*m{ 76 kgf*cm , 66 in.*lbf }



4. INSTALL CRANKSHAFT DAMPER SUB-ASSEMBLY

  1. Align the damper set key with the key groove of the crankshaft damper.

  1. Using SST and a hammer, tap in the damper.

    245 N*m{ 2,498 kgf*cm , 181 ft.*lbf }



5. INSTALL IDLER PULLEY ASSEMBLY

  1. Install the idler with the 2 bolts and 2 nuts.

    Torque:
    16 N*m{ 163 kgf*cm , 12 ft.*lbf } for 12 mm head

    Torque:
    32 N*m{ 326 kgf*cm , 24 ft.*lbf } for 14 mm head

    Bolt length:
    106 mm (4.17 in.) for 12 mm head bolt A
    114 mm (4.49 in.) for 14 mm head bolt B



6. INSTALL V-RIBBED BELT TENSIONER ASSEMBLY

  1. Install the belt tensioner with the bolt and 2 nuts.

    Torque:
    15.5 N*m{ 158 kgf*cm , 11 ft.*lbf }

    HINT:
    Use a bolt that is 106 mm (4.17 in.) in length.



7. INSTALL NO. 2 TIMING BELT COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY

  1. Set the No. 2 cover by matching the claws and pin with each part.

  1. Install the timing belt cover with the 2 bolts.

    Torque:
    16 N*m{ 163 kgf*cm , 12 ft.*lbf }

    HINT:
    Use bolts that are 106 mm (4.17 in.) in length.



8. INSTALL NO. 2 IDLER PULLEY SUB-ASSEMBLY

  1. Install the idler pulley and cover plate with the bolt.

    Torque:
    39 N*m{ 398 kgf*cm , 29 in.*lbf }



9. INSTALL NO. 3 TIMING BELT COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY LH

  1. Install the gasket to the cover.

  1. Pass the camshaft position sensor wire through the cover hole.

  1. Install the cover with the 4 bolts.

    Torque:
    7.5 N*m{ 76 kgf*cm , 66 in.*lbf }

  1. Install the wire grommet to the cover.

  1. Install the sensor connector to the sensor holder.

  1. Connect the sensor connector.

  1. Install the sensor wire to the wire clamp on the cover.

  1. Install the engine wire to the 2 wire clamps on the cover.



10. INSTALL OIL COOLER PIPE

  1. Connect the 3 water by-pass hoses as shown in the illustration.

  1. Install the oil cooler pipe to the cover with the cap nut and the bolt.

    Torque:
    7.5 N*m{ 76 kgf*cm , 66 in.*lbf }



11. INSTALL NO. 3 TIMING BELT COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY RH

  1. Install the gasket to the cover.

  1. Install the cover with the cap nut and 3 bolts.

    Torque:
    7.5 N*m{ 76 kgf*cm , 66 in.*lbf }



12. CONNECT COMPRESSOR ASSEMBLY

  1. Set the cooler compressor to the engine. Then install the stay, wire bracket, 3 bolts and nut to connect the cooler compressor.

    Torque:
    49 N*m{ 500 kgf*cm , 36 ft.*lbf } for bolts
    29 N*m{ 295 kgf*cm , 21 ft.*lbf } for nut



13. INSTALL NO. 1 IDLER PULLEY BRACKET SUB-ASSEMBLY

  1. Install the bracket with the 2 bolts.

    Torque:
    39 N*m{ 400 kgf*cm , 29 ft.*lbf }

  1. Install the idler pulley and pulley plate with the bolt.

    Torque:
    39 N*m{ 400 kgf*cm , 29 ft.*lbf }



14. INSTALL GENERATOR ASSEMBLY

  1. Install the generator with the bolt and 2 nuts.

    HINT:
    Install the bolt and 2 nuts in alphabetical order.

    Torque:
    39 N*m{ 398 kgf*cm , 29 ft.*lbf } for bolt A and nut B
    15.5 N*m{ 158 kgf*cm , 11 ft.*lbf } for nut C

  1. Install the ground cable with the bolt D.

  1. Install the battery cable with the nut, and then attach the rubber cap.

    Torque:
    12 N*m{ 122 kgf*cm , 9 ft.*lbf }

  1. Install the bracket with the bolt.

    Torque:
    6.0 N*m{ 61 kgf*cm , 53 in.*lbf }

  1. Connect the cable to the generator.



15. INSTALL V-RIBBED BELT

  1. Set the V-belt to everything except the No. 2 idler pulley, as shown in the illustration.

  1. Loosen the V-belt by turning the belt tensioner counterclockwise.

  1. Then set the V-belt to the idler pulley.

  1. After a new belt has been installed, check that the mark is within the A range shown in the illustration.



16. INSTALL RADIATOR ASSEMBLY
  1. Install the radiator (Click here).



17. CONNECT NO. 1 OIL COOLER OUTLET TUBE

  1. Connect the outlet tube.

  1. Attach the tube to the radiator's clamp.



18. CONNECT NO. 1 OIL COOLER INLET TUBE

19. CONNECT RADIATOR HOSE OUTLET

  1. Connect the hose outlet.

    HINT:
    1. Face the clamp's claw toward the bottom of the vehicle.
    1. Make sure the clearance between the clamp edge and radiator hose edge (labeled A) is between 1 to 5 mm (0.039 to 0.197 in.).
    1. Insert the hose until it contacts the radiator. Make sure the clearance between the hose and radiator (labeled B) is between 0 to 2.5 mm (0 to 0.098 in.).



20. CONNECT RADIATOR HOSE INLET


21. INSTALL AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY
  1. Install the air cleaner assembly with the 3 bolts.

    Torque:
    5.0 N*m{ 51 kgf*cm , 44 in.*lbf }

  1. Connect the MAF meter connector and clamp to the air cleaner.



22. INSTALL NO. 1 AIR CLEANER INLET
  1. Install the No. 1 air cleaner inlet and bolt.

    Torque:
    5.0 N*m{ 51 kgf*cm , 44 in.*lbf }



23. INSTALL INTAKE AIR CONNECTOR PIPE

  1. Install the connector pipe with the bolt and 2 hose clamps.

    Torque:
    4.0 N*m{ 41 kgf*cm , 35 ft.*lbf } for hose clamps
    5.0 N*m{ 51 kgf*cm , 44 ft.*lbf } for bolt

  1. Connect the air hose and No. 1 ventilation hose.



24. INSTALL V-BANK COVER
  1. Install the V-bank cover with the 2 nuts.

    Torque:
    5.0 N*m{ 51 kgf*cm , 44 in.*lbf }



25. REMOVE ENGINE ROOM SIDE COVER LH

  1. Install the side cover with the 3 clips.



26. REMOVE ENGINE ROOM SIDE COVER RH

  1. Install the side cover with the 2 clips and nut.



27. REMOVE COOL AIR INTAKE DUCT SEAL

  1. Install the intake duct seal with the 7 clips.



28. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL


29. PERFORM INITIALIZATION
  1. Perform initialization (Click here).

    NOTICE:
    Certain systems need to be initialized after disconnecting and reconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.



30. ADD ENGINE COOLANT
  1. Tighten the radiator drain cock plug by hand.

  1. Tighten the 2 cylinder block drain cock plugs.

    Torque:
    12.7 N*m{ 130 kgf*cm , 9 ft.*lbf }

  1. Add engine coolant.

    HINT:
    Add engine coolant until coolant overflows from the vent plug.

    Specified capacity:
    11.0 liters (11.7 US qts, 9.7 lmp. qts)

    HINT:
    1. TOYOTA vehicles are filled with TOYOTA SLLC at the factory. In order to avoid damage to the engine cooling system and other technical problems, only use TOYOTA SLLC or similar high quality ethylene glycol based non-silicate, non-amine, non-nitrite, non-borate coolant with long-life hybrid organic acid technology (coolant with long-life hybrid organic acid technology consists of a combination of low phosphates and organic acids).
    1. Please contact your TOYOTA dealer for further details.

  1. Install the vent plug.

  1. Slowly pour coolant into the radiator reservoir until it reaches the FULL line.

  1. Press the inlet and outlet radiator hoses several times by hand, and then check the level of the coolant.
    If the coolant level is low, add coolant.

  1. Install the radiator cap.

  1. Bleed air from the cooling system.

    1. Warm up the engine until the thermostat opens. While the thermostat is open, circulate the coolant for several minutes.

      HINT:
      Adjust the air conditioner set temperature to MAX (HOT).

    2. Maintain the engine speed at 2,000 to 2,500 rpm.

    3. Press the inlet and outlet radiator hoses several times by hand to bleed air.

      NOTICE:
      When pressing the radiator hoses:
      1. Wear protective gloves.
      1. Be careful as the radiator hoses are hot.
      1. Keep your hands away from the radiator fan.

  1. Stop the engine, and wait until the engine coolant cools down to ambient temperature.

    CAUTION:
    Do not remove the radiator cap while the engine and radiator are still hot. Pressurized, hot engine coolant and steam may be released and cause serious burns.

  1. Check the coolant level in the radiator reservoir.
    If the coolant level is low, add SLLC to the radiator reservoir FULL line.
