1. INSPECT BRAKE LINE PIPES AND HOSES

HINT:
Work in a well-lighted area. Turn the front wheels fully to the right or left before beginning the inspection.

  1. Using a mirror, check the entire circumference and length of the brake lines and hoses for:

    1. Damage
    2. Wear
    3. Deformation
    4. Cracks
    5. Corrosion
    6. Leaks
    7. Bends
    8. Twists

  1. Check all the clamps for tightness and the connections for leakage.

  1. Check that the hoses and lines are not near sharp edges, moving parts or the exhaust system.

  1. Check that the lines are installed properly and pass through the center of the grommets.



2. INSPECT BRAKE PEDAL
  1. Stop the engine and depress the brake pedal several times until no vacuum is left in the booster.

  1. Press the pedal until a slight resistance is felt. Measure the distance as shown in the illustration.

    Pedal free play:
    1.0 to 2.0 mm (0.039 to 0.079 in.)

    If the pedal free play is 1 mm (0.04 in) or less, check the protrusion of the stop light switch assembly shaft.

    Protrusion of the stop light switch assembly shaft:
    0.5 to 2.4 mm (0.020 to 0.095 in.)

    If the protrusion is not within the specified value range, adjust it.
    If the protrusion is within the specified value range, it is normal though brake pedal free play is 1.0 mm (0.039 in.) or less.



3. INSPECT PARKING BRAKE

4. INSPECT BRAKE LININGS AND DRUMS
  1. Check the brake linings and drums. Also check the brake linings of parking brake.



5. INSPECT FRONT BRAKE
  1. Check the front brake pads and discs. (Click here)



6. INSPECT REAR BRAKE
  1. Check the rear brake pads and discs. (Click here)



7. INSPECT OR CHANGE BRAKE FLUID
