| 1. CHECK FOR COOLANT LEAK |
![]() |
Fill the radiator with coolant and attach a radiator cap tester.
Warm up the engine.
Using the radiator cap tester, increase the pressure inside the radiator to 118 kPa (1.2 kgf/cm2, 17 psi), and check that the pressure does not drop.
If the pressure drops, check the hoses, radiator and water pump for leaks. If no external leaks are found, check the heater core, cylinder block and head.
| 2. CHECK ENGINE COOLANT LEVEL IN RESERVOIR |
![]() |
Check that the engine coolant level is between the LOW and FULL lines when the engine is cold.
If the engine coolant is below the LOW line, check for leaks and add "TOYOTA Super Long Life Coolant" or similar high quality ethylene glycol based non-silicate, non-amine, non-nitrite and non-borate coolant with long-life hybrid organic acid technology to the FULL line.
| 3. CHECK ENGINE COOLANT QUALITY |
Remove the radiator reservoir cap.
Check if there are any excessive deposits of rust or scales around the radiator cap and radiator filler hole. Also, the coolant should be free of oil.
If it is excessively dirty, clean the coolant passage and replace the coolant.
Install the radiator reservoir cap.
| 4. CHECK COOLING FAN SYSTEM |
Put the vehicle in the following conditions.
The engine switch is off.
The engine coolant temperature is less than 92°C (198°F).
The battery voltage is between 11 and 14 V.
The A/C switch is OFF.
![]() |
Connect the 400 A probe of an ammeter to terminals z3-2 (M+) and z4-2 (S+) of the cooling fan motor.
Turn the engine switch on (IG) and wait for approximately 10 seconds. Check that the fan stops.
Start the engine. Check that the fan stops with the engine idling.
Check that the fan operates when the A/C switch is turned ON (MAX COOL and the magnet clutch is operating).
| Item | Specified Condition |
| No. 1 cooling fan motor | 2 to 12 A |
| No. 2 cooling fan motor | 2 to 12 A |
Check that the fan operates when the engine coolant temperature sensor connector is disconnected.
| Item | Specified Condition |
| No. 1 cooling fan motor | 2 to 17 A |
| No. 2 cooling fan motor | 2 to 17 A |
After the engine is warmed up, check that the fan operates as shown in the illustration below.
