1. CHECK STEERING WHEEL FREE PLAY

(a) Stop the vehicle. Position the steering wheel in the center position with the tires pointing straight ahead.

(b) Turn the steering wheel gently right and left, and check the steering wheel free play.

Maximum free play:

40 mm (1.58 in.)

If the free play exceeds the maximum, replace the steering intermediate shaft sub-assembly or steering link assembly.

2. CHECK STEERING EFFORT

(a) Center the steering wheel.

(b) Remove the steering wheel pad.

(c) Start the engine and run it at idle.

(d) Measure the steering effort in both directions.

Standard steering effort:

4.9 N*m (50 kgf*cm, 43 in.*lbf)

HINT:

Be sure to consider the tire type, pressure and contact surface before making your diagnosis.

(e) Install the steering wheel set nut.

Torque:

50 N·m {510 kgf·cm, 37ft·lbf}

(f) Install the steering wheel pad.
