REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

1993-94 323, 1993-95 MX3 and 1993-97 Protege, 626 and MX6
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle and remove the rear wheels.
  2. Remove the hubcap. Hold the brake to remove the center axle nut.
  3. If equipped with drum brakes, remove the drum.
  4. If equipped with disc brakes, without disconnecting the hydraulic hose, remove the disc brake caliper and hang it from the body. Do not let it hang by the hose. Slide the disc off the spindle.
  5. Slide the hub and bearing assembly off the spindle. The hub and bearing cannot be separated and must be replaced as one piece.

    To install:

  6. Install the hub and drum or rotor. If equipped, install the brake caliper.
  7. Install a new spindle nut and tighten to 130-173 ft. lbs. (177-235 Nm). Stake the nut into place. Replace the hubcap.
  8. Install the wheel and tire assembly and lower the vehicle.
1993-95 929
  1. Loosen the hub nut and raise and safely support the vehicle. Remove the wheel and tire assembly and the nut.
  2. Remove the brake caliper and suspend it from the coil spring; do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose.
  3. Remove the ABS speed sensor and the disc brake rotor. Remove the parking brake shoe assembly.
  4. Disconnect the rear lower lateral link and the stabilizer bar link from the knuckle.
  5. Disconnect the upper and lower lateral links and trailing links from the knuckle.
  6. Remove the brake backing plate mounting bolts, remove the parking brake cable mounting bolts and remove the cable.
  7. Remove the lower strut bolt and remove the hub/knuckle assembly. If the halfshaft sticks to the hub, install the old hub nut until it is flush with the end of the shaft. Tap out the shaft, using a soft mallet only.
  8. Properly support the hub/knuckle assembly and press the hub from the knuckle. If the bearing race sticks to the knuckle, grind the race in 1 spot until only 0.20 in. (0.5mm) thickness remains. Cut the race with a chisel and remove it.
  9. Remove the brake backing plate from the knuckle. Remove the bearing snapring.
  10. Properly support the knuckle and press out the bearing.

    To install:

  11. Inspect the knuckle and hub for cracks or other damage. Replace parts as necessary.
  12. Properly support the knuckle and press in a new bearing. Install the snapring and the brake backing plate.
  13. Properly support the knuckle and press on the hub.
  14. Position the hub/knuckle assembly and install the lower strut bolt. Tighten to 69 ft. lbs. (93 Nm).
  15. Connect the parking brake cable and install the backing plate bolts.
  16. Connect the upper trailing link and tighten the nut to 42 ft. lbs. (57 Nm). Connect the lower trailing link and tighten the nut to 116 ft. lbs. (157 Nm). Install new cotter pins.
  17. Connect the upper lateral link and tighten the nut to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm). Connect the lower lateral link and tighten the nut to 116 ft. lbs. (157 Nm). Install new cotter pins.
  18. Connect the stabilizer link and tighten the nut to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm). Connect the rear lower lateral link and tighten the nut to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm). Install a new cotter pin.
  19. Install the parking brake shoe assembly and the brake rotor. Connect the ABS speed sensor and tighten the bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  20. Install the brake caliper, and tighten the bolts to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
  21. Loosely install a new hub nut and washer. Install the wheel and tire assembly and lower the vehicle.
  22. Tighten the hub nut to 174-231 ft. lbs. (236-314 Nm). After torquing, stake the nut with a hammer and dull-bladed chisel.
  23. Check the wheel alignment.
1995-97 Millenia
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the wheel.
  3. Remove the brake caliper assembly.
  4. Remove the locknut dust cap and the locknut.
  5. Remove the brake disc plate and the hub assembly.
  6. Remove the parking brake shoe assembly and disconnect the parking brake cable.
  7. Remove the backing plate and the ABS wheel speed sensor from the spindle.
  8. Disconnect the rear lower lateral link ball joint, upper and lower trailing link ball joints, and the upper and lower lateral link ball joints.
  9. Remove the spindle.

    To install:

  10. Replace the spindle to the vehicle.
  11. Connect the lower lateral link ball joint, torque the nut to 85-115 ft. lbs. (116-156 Nm).
  12. Connect the upper lateral link ball joint, torque the nut to 41-59 ft. lbs. (55-80 Nm).
  13. Connect the upper trailing link ball joint, torque the nut to 28-38 ft. lbs. (38-51 Nm).
  14. Connect the lower trailing link ball joint, torque the nut to 55-77 ft. lbs. (75-104 Nm).
  15. Connect the rear lower lateral link ball joint, torque the nut to 41-59 ft. lbs. (55-80 Nm).
  16. Install the ABS wheel speed sensor, torque the mounting bolt 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm).
  17. Install the backing plate, torque the mounting nuts to 21-29 ft. lbs. (28-40 Nm).
  18. Connect the parking brake cable and install the parking brake shoe assembly.
  19. Install the wheel hub assembly.
  20. Replace the disc plate and install the locknut, torque to 131-173 ft. lbs. (177-235 Nm).
  21. Install the hub nut dust cap and install the brake caliper.
  22. Install the wheel.
1993-97 Miata
  1. Loosen the axle nut, then raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly and the axle nut.
  3. Remove the brake caliper assembly and hang it from the body. Do not let it hang by the hose.
  4. Remove the disc and the ABS speed sensor. Remove the sensor bracket.
  5. Remove the lower and upper control arm bolts and remove the knuckle and hub assembly from the vehicle.
  6. Be careful not to distort the back plate. If damaged, a new one must be pressed onto the knuckle.
  7. To remove the hub, remove the seal and properly support the assembly to press the hub out from the back. If the inner bearing race stays on the hub, use a chisel to move it far enough to grab it with a bearing puller.
  8. Remove the snapring and press the bearing out of the knuckle.

    To install:

  9. Carefully inspect all parts for wear or damage, replace as necessary. Always install a new seal and bearing.
  10. Apply grease to the wheel bearing. When pressing the new bearing into the knuckle, make sure to press only on the outer race.
  11. Apply grease to the hub. Install the snapring, support the inner race and press the hub into the bearing. Failure to properly support the bearing races for pressing will ruin the bearing.
  12. Lubricate and install a new seal, and fit the knuckle into place on the suspension. Torque the upper control arm bolt to 49 ft. lbs. (67 Nm) and the lower bolt to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  13. Install the sensor bracket and the ABS speed sensor.
  14. Install the brake disc. Install the brake caliper, and torque the bolts to 51 ft. lbs. (69 Nm).
  15. Install the washer and a new axle nut. With all 4 wheels on the ground, torque the nut to 160-217 ft. lbs. (216-294 Nm). Stake the nut into place.
  16. Check and adjust the rear wheel alignment.
1993-95 RX7
  1. Loosen the hub nut and raise and safely support the vehicle. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  2. Disconnect the ABS sensor. Remove the caliper and suspend it from the coil spring; do not let it hang by the brake hose.
  3. Remove the hub nut and washer. Remove the disc brake rotor.
  4. Remove the upper and lower control arm bolts and the toe control link bolt. Remove the hub/knuckle assembly.

    NOTE: If the halfshaft is stuck in the hub, install the old hub nut until it is flush with the end of the shaft. Tap out the shaft, using a soft mallet only.

  5. Properly support the hub/knuckle assembly and press the hub from the knuckle. If the bearing race sticks to the knuckle, grind the race in 1 spot until only 0.02 in. (0.5mm) thickness remains. Cut the race with a chisel and remove it.
  6. Remove the snapring from the knuckle. Properly support the knuckle and press out the bearing.
  7. Inspect the hub and knuckle for cracks or other damage and replace as necessary.
  8. Remove the axle shaft from the differential.

    To install:

  9. Install the axleshaft into the differential.
  10. Properly support the knuckle and press in the new bearing. Install a new snapring.
  11. Properly support the knuckle and press on the hub.
  12. Install the hub knuckle assembly. Tighten the upper and lower control arm bolts to 44-54 ft. lbs. (59-73 Nm) and the toe control link bolt to 48-57 ft. lbs. (64-78 Nm).
  13. Install the brake rotor and loosely install a new hub nut and washer.
  14. Install the brake caliper and tighten the bolts to 34-49 ft. lbs. (46-67 Nm). Connect the ABS sensor and tighten the bolt to 12-16 ft. lbs. (16-22 Nm).
  15. Install the wheel and tire assembly and lower the vehicle.
  16. Tighten the wheel hub nut to 174-231 ft. lbs. (236-313 Nm). After torquing, stake the hub nut using a hammer and dull-bladed chisel.
  17. Check the wheel alignment.
