REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

1993-94 323, 929 Miata and 1993-95 MX3, Protege and 1993-97 626 and MX6
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly and remove the brake drum.
  3. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the backside of the brake backing plate.
  4. From the brake shoe side of the backing plate remove the upper return spring.
  5. From the lower (leading side) brake shoe, remove the hold pin and the spring.
  6. Remove the lower (leading side) brake shoe and lower return spring and the anti-rattle spring.
  7. Remove the upper (trailing side) brake shoe hold pin and spring and remove the upper brake shoe.

    To install:

  8. Install the upper (trailing side) brake shoe to the operating lever and then to the wheel cylinder and backing plate. Install the brake shoe hold spring and hold pin.
  9. Install the anti-rattle spring.
  10. Install the lower return spring to both brake shoes.
  11. Install the leading side brake shoe to the operating lever and then to the wheel cylinder and anchor plate.
  12. Install the hold spring and hold pin to the leading side brake shoe.
  13. Install the upper return spring.
  14. Install the brake drum.
  15. Replace the tire and wheel assembly and safely lower the vehicle.
