Turn Signal (Combination) Switch

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1990–94 Vehicles

NOTE: The headlights, turn signals, dimmer switch, windshield/washer and, on some models, the cruise control function are all built into 1 multi-function combination switch that is mounted on the steering column.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Remove the knee protector panel under the steering column, then the upper and lower column cover.
  3. Remove the horn pad attaching screw on the under side of the steering wheel and remove the horn pad by pushing the pad upward.
  4. Matchmark and remove the steering wheel with a steering wheel puller. Do not hammer on the steering wheel to remove it or the collapsible mechanism may be damaged.
  5. Locate the rectangular plugs in the knee protector on either side of the steering column. Pry these plugs out and remove the screws. Remove the screws from the hood lock release lever and position lever aside. Remove the knee protector.
  6. Remove the upper and lower column cover.
  7. Remove the lap cooler duct.
  8. Remove the band retaining the switch wiring.
  9. Detach all connectors, remove the wiring clip. Remove the retainers and the column switch assembly.

    To install:

  10. Install the switch assembly and secure the clip. Make sure no wires are pinched or out of place.
  11. Install the lap cooler ducts.
  12. Install the column covers and knee protector.
  13. Install the steering wheel. Tighten the steering wheel-to-column nut to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  14. Connect the negative battery cable and check all functions of the combination switch for proper operation.
1995–98 Vehicles
  1. Position the wheels in the straight ahead position, then turn the ignition to the LOCK position.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wrap the negative cable with insulated tape and wait at least 60 seconds before continuing the procedure, in order to allow the air bag system time to disarm.
  3. Remove the steering wheel.
  4. Unfasten the retainers, then remove lower column cover.
  5. Remove the screw, then remove the column pad.
  6. Unfasten the retainers, then remove the upper column cover.
  7. Remove the retainers, then remove the clock spring and combination switch assembly.

    To install:

  8. Install the combination switch assembly and clock spring and secure with the retainers.
  9. Install the column covers and pad.
  10. Install the steering wheel.
  11. Remove the tape from the negative battery cable, then connect the cable.
  12. Turn the ignition ON and check the SRS warning light for proper operation.
