Removal & Installation

2.4L Engine

To Remove:

1. Remove the breather hose.
2. Remove the positive crankcase ventilation hose.
3. Remove the positive crankcase ventilation valve.
4. Remove the oil filler cap.
5. Remove the rocker cover and gasket.
6. Remove the oil seals.
7. Remove the rocker shaft cap.

   CAUTION
   If you are reusing the lash adjuster, clean it before installing.

8. When you remove the rocker arms and rocker arm shafts (intake side and exhaust side), place a lash adjuster holder (8) (special tool #MD998443) to keep the lash adjuster from falling off.
9. Remove the rocker shaft spring.
10. Remove rocker arms B.
11. Remove rocker arms A.
12. Remove the rocker arm shaft on the intake side.
13. Remove the lash adjusters.
14. Remove rocker arms C.
15. Remove the rocker arm shaft on the exhaust side.
16. Remove the camshaft.

To Install:

1. Install the camshaft.

   CAUTION
   If you are reusing the lash adjuster, clean it before installing.

2. To install the lash adjusters, fit the lash adjuster onto the rocker arm without allowing fuel to spill. Put the lash adjuster holder (8) (special tool #MD998443) to keep the lash adjuster from coming loose and falling off.
3. Install the rocker arm shaft on the exhaust side.
4. Install rocker arm C.
5. Install the rocker arm shaft on the intake side.
6. Install rocker arm A.
7. Install rocker arm B.
8. When installing the rocker shaft spring, rocker arms, and rocker arm shafts, do the following:
   • Step 1: Install the exhaust side rocker arm C and shaft assembly onto the cylinder head.
   • Step 2: Install the inlet side rocker arms A and B and the shaft assembly onto the cylinder head.
   • Step 3: Install the rocker shaft spring onto the intake side rocker arm shaft as illustrated.

     Rocker arms & rocker arm shaft installation (2.4L)

   • Step 4: Make sure that the notch in the end of the rocker arm shaft is facing in the direction seen in the illustration.
9. Install the rocker shaft cap.
10. When installing the camshaft oil seal, put clean engine oil onto the lip of the oil seal and the front end outside diameter of the camshaft. Use a camshaft oil seal installer (special tool #MD998713) to install the camshaft oil seal.
11. Install the oil seal.
12. Install the rocker cover gasket and rocker cover.
13. Install the oil filler cap.
14. Install the positive crankcase ventilation valve.
15. Install the positive crankcase ventilation hose.
16. Install the breather hose.

3.0L Engine

To Remove:

1. Remove the breather hose.
2. Remove the positive crankcase ventilation hose.
3. Remove the positive crankcase ventilation valve.
4. Remove the oil filler cap.
5. Remove the rocker cover and gasket.
6. Remove the oil seal and camshaft oil seal.
7. Remove the rocker shaft cap.

   CAUTION
   If you are reusing the lash adjuster, clean it before installing.

   Special tool #MD998443

8. When removing the rocker arms and shafts, use a lash adjuster holder (special tool #MD998443) to keep the lash adjuster from falling off.
9. Remove the rocker shaft spring.
10. Remove the rocker arm A and rocker arm B.
11. Remove the rocker arm shaft.
12. Remove the lash adjusters.
13. Remove rocker arm C.
14. Remove the rocker arm shaft.
15. Remove the harness bracket.
16. Remove the thrust case (left bank only).
17. Remove the O-ring (left bank only).
18. Remove the camshaft.

To Install:

1. When installing the camshaft, put clean engine oil onto the camshaft journals and cams. The camshaft for the right bank has a slit for driving the distributor at the rear end. The camshaft for the left bank does not have a slit. Make sure you install the proper camshaft in the correct position.
2. Install the O-ring (left bank only).
3. Install the thrust case (left bank only).
4. Install the harness bracket.

   CAUTION
   If you are reusing the lash adjuster, clean it before installing.

5. When installing the lash adjusters, put the lash adjuster onto the rocker arm making sure not to let any fuel spill out. Put on the lash adjuster holder (special tool MD998443) to keep the lash adjuster from falling off.
6. Install the rocker arm shafts.
7. Install the rocker arm C.
8. Install rocker arm B.
9. Install rocker arm A.
10. When installing the rocker shaft spring, rocker arms, and rocker arm shafts, do the following:
    • Step 1: Turn the camshaft until the dowel pin on its front end is positioned as illustrated.

      NOTE: Put the camshaft in the position shown to minimize the amount of cam lift, which makes it easier to install the rocker arm and shaft assemblies.

    • Step 2: Install the exhaust side rocker arm C and shaft assembly to the cylinder head.
    • Step 3: Install the inlet side rocker arms A and B and the shaft assembly onto the cylinder head.

      Rocker shaft spring (3.0L)

    • Step 4: Insert the rocker shaft spring to the intake side rocker arm shaft as shown.

      Rocker arm shaft notch (3.0L)

    • Step 5: Be sure the notch in the end of the rocker arm shaft is facing the direction shown in the illustration.
11. Install the rocker shaft cap.
12. When installing the camshaft oil seal, do the following:
    • Step 1: Put a small amount of clean engine oil onto the lip of the oil seal and the front end outside diameter of the camshaft.
    • Step 2: Use a camshaft oil seal installer (special tool #MD998713) and a camshaft oil seal installer adaptor (special tool #MB991559) (for the left bank only) to install the camshaft oil seals.
13. Install the oil seal.
14. Install the rocker cover gasket and rocker cover.
15. Install the oil filler cap.
16. Install the positive crankcase ventilation valve.
17. Install the positive crankcase ventilation hose.
18. Install the breather hose.
