Rocker Arms & Camshafts

Removal & Installation

2.4L Engine

To Remove:

Rocker arms & camshaft (2.4L)

  1. Remove the breather hose.
  2. Remove the positive crankcase ventilation hose.
  3. Remove the positive crankcase ventilation valve.
  4. Remove the oil filler cap.
  5. Remove the rocker cover and gasket.
  6. Remove the upper oil seal.
  7. Remove the lower oil seal.
  8. When you remove the rocker arm from the rocker shaft (intake side and exhaust side), mark them to show the location to ensure correct installation of the rocker arm, the piston arm assembly, etc.
  9. Remove the nuts.
  10. Remove the adjusting screws.
  11. Remove the rocker arm shaft assembly (intake side).
  12. Remove the rocker arm "C".
  13. Remove the piston arm assembly.
  14. Remove the rocker arm "D".
  15. Remove the rocker arm shaft (exhaust side).
  16. Remove the engine oil control valve.
  17. Remove the O-ring.
  18. Remove the snap ring.
  19. Remove the accumulator spring seat.
  20. Remove the plunger spring.
  21. Remove the accumulator plunger.
  22. Remove the accumulator body.
  23. Remove the taper plug.
  24. Remove the engine oil control valve filter.
  25. Remove the camshaft.

To Install:

Rocker arms & camshaft (2.4L)

  1. Install the camshaft.
  2. Install the engine oil control valve filter.
  3. Install the taper plug.
  4. Install the accumulator body.
  5. Install the accumulator plunger.
  6. Install the plunger spring.
  7. Install the accumulator spring seat.
  8. Install the snap ring.
  9. When installing the O-ring and the engine oil control valve, do the following:
  10. Install the rocker arm shaft (exhaust side).
  11. Install the rocker arm "D".
  12. Install the piston arm assembly.
  13. Install the rocker arm "C".
  14. Install the rocker arm shaft assembly (intake side).
  15. Install the adjusting screw. When you install the screw onto the rocker arm, project it about 0.12 in (3 mm) from the face of the rocker arm end.
  16. Install the nuts.
  17. When installing the rocker arms and the rocker arm shafts (exhaust side), do the following:
  18. When installing the camshaft oil seal, apply clean engine oil to the lip of the oil seal and the front end outside diameter of camshaft. Use a camshaft oil seal installer (special tool #MD998713) to install the camshaft oil seal.
  19. Install the other oil seal.
  20. Install the rocker cover gasket and rocker cover.
  21. Install the oil filler cap.
  22. Install the positive crankcase ventilation valve.
  23. Install the positive crankcase ventilation hose.
  24. Install the breather hose.
3.8L Engine

To Remove:

Rocker arms & camshaft (3.8L)

  1. Remove the breather hose.
  2. Remove the blow-by hose.
  3. Remove the positive crankcase ventilation hose.
  4. Remove the positive crankcase ventilation valve.
  5. Remove the oil filler cap.
  6. Remove the rocker cover (left) and gasket.
  7. Remove the rocker cover (right) and gasket.
  8. Remove the oil seal.
  9. Remove the camshaft oil seal.
  10. Remove the rocker shaft cap.
  11. When removing the rocker arms and shaft assembly, mark the parts to ensure correct positioning during installation.
  12. Remove the rocker shaft cap.
  13. When removing the rocker arms and shaft assembly, place the lash adjuster holder (special tool #MD998443) to keep the lash adjuster from falling off.

    CAUTION
    If you are reusing the lash adjuster, clean it before installing.

  14. Remove the rocker arms and shaft intake.
  15. Remove the nut and adjusting screw.
  16. Remove the rocker arm "C".
  17. Remove the piston arm assembly.
  18. Remove the rocker arm "D".
  19. Remove the rocker arm shaft.
  20. Remove the lash adjuster.
  21. Remove the right and left camshafts.

To Install:

Rocker arms & camshaft (3.8L)

CAUTION
Be careful not to confuse the right and left bank camshafts.

  1. When installing the left and right camshafts, apply clean engine oil onto the camshaft journals and cams and then install the camshafts.

    NOTE: The longer camshaft is for the left bank.

  2. Make sure the dowel pin of the camshaft is in the position shown.

    Camshaft installation (3.8L)

    CAUTION
    If you are reusing the lash adjuster, clean it before installation.

  3. When installing the lash adjuster, fit it onto the rocker arm without letting fuel spill out. Place the lash adjuster holder (special tool #MD998443) to keep the lash adjuster from falling off.
  4. Install the rocker arm shaft.
  5. Install the rocker arm "D".
  6. Install the piston arm assembly.
  7. Install the rocker arm "C".
  8. When installing the adjusting screw and nut, first temporarily install the screw onto the rocker arm and project it about 0.12 in (3 mm) from the same face level of the rocker arm end.
  9. Install the rocker arms and shaft intake.
  10. To install the rocker arms and shaft assembly, do the following:
  11. Install the rocker shaft cap.
  12. When installing the camshaft oil seal, apply clean engine oil to the lip of the oil seal and the front end outside diameter of camshaft. Use a camshaft oil seal installer (special tool #MD998713) to install the camshaft oil seal.
  13. Install the oil seal.
  14. Install the rocker cover gasket.
  15. Install the rocker cover (right).
  16. Install the rocker cover gasket.
  17. Install the rocker cover (left).
  18. Install the oil filler cap.
  19. Install the positive crankcase ventilation valve and hose.
  20. Install the blow-by hose.
  21. Install the breather hose.
