Emergency Jacking

Mitsubishi Pick-ups and Monteros use a cartridge or bottle jack. This is a jack with a heavier lifting capacity. Do not attempt the lift the vehicle with a scissors jack borrowed from a car.

1. Block the wheel opposite to the one being removed in front of and to the rear of the tire. Apply the handbrake and make sure the engine is OFF. Make sure the jack will be supported on a hard surface.

2. Jacking points are as follows:
   • Montero front: either of two reinforced positions (inboard or outboard) on the transmission support crossmember.
   • Montero rear: on the rear axle, just inboard of the shock absorber mount.
   • Pick-up front: on the frame rail, just behind the transmission support crossmember.
   • Pick-up rear: on the frame rail just ahead of the spring mount (preferred) or on the rear axle, inboard of the spring.
3. Pry off the center wheel cap by using the wheel nut wrench.
4. Loosen the lug nuts with the wrench. Don't remove them yet.
5. Tighten the relief valve on the jack by using the slotted end of the jack handle.
6. Fit the jack handle into the holder pump up and down to partially raise the jack ram. Push the jack into position at the jacking point nearest the flat tire. Make certain the groove in the top of the ram aligns with the contact point.
7. Continue elevating the jack until the flat tire is clear of the ground.

   WARNING
   The jack is hydraulic and the ram is a two-stage type. When both rams are raised and the stop mark of the upper ram becomes visible, stop jacking immediately. Further extension of the ram may damage the jack.

8. Install the new wheel, and then install and slightly tighten all the lug nuts.
9. Remove the lug wrench from the jack holder and place it on the relief valve.
10. SLOWLY loosen the valve, allowing the vehicle to settle to the ground. Do not release the jack suddenly and allow the vehicle to crash to the ground; damage to wheels, tires and suspension may result.
11. Tighten the lug nuts and install the center or hub cap.
12. Remove the jack. Occasionally, the upper ram will not retract enough allow the jack to come out. If this happens, get in the vehicle and rock the body from side to side with some vigor; the motion will compress the ram the needed fractions of an inch.
13. Securely stow the jack and the flat tire in the vehicle.
14. Remove the wheel chock.
