Fig. 2: The VIN number breakdown (typical)

The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is located on a plate attached to the left front of the dash panel so it can be seen through the windshield when you stand beside the vehicle, in front of the driver's door. The letters and numbers in the VIN digits can be interpreted according to their positions in the sequence as follows:

  1. Manufacturing country.
  2. Make.
  3. Vehicle type.
  4. Type of seat belt system, weight class of truck/multi-purpose vehicle.
  5. Vehicle line.
  6. Trim code/price class.
  7. Body type.
  8. Engine displacement.
  9. Check digit — a special letter or number code used to verify the serial number. This contains no useful information for the vehicle owner.
  10. Model year
  11. Plant where the vehicle was built.
  12. On 1985 and earlier vehicles, the 12th digit represents the transmission code, followed by a 5–digit sequential (serial) number. For 1986 and all later vehicles, all 6 digits are the sequential number.
