TOWING THE VEHICLE

NOTE: When towing, make sure the the transmission, axles, steering system and powertrain are in good order. If any unit is damaged, a dolly should be used.

When the steering wheel can be unlocked with the ignition key, towing should be accomplished by hooking cables to the towing hooks under the front of the chassis. As long as vehicles with manual transmissions can be put in Neutral, (4–wheel drive: Select Neutral and 2H; unlock freewheeling hubs) there is no mileage limit to the distance they may be towed or limit as to maximum speed. Automatic transmission equipped vehicles must not be towed faster than 19 mph (30 kmph) or for a greater distance than 15 miles (24 km), as certain transmission parts will not be lubricated. To tow these vehicles a greater distance, raise the drive wheels off the ground or transport the vehicle on a flatbed.

If the ignition key is not available, the vehicle should be towed with the front wheels off the ground because of the locked steering wheel.
