Component Replacement

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Distributor Cap and Rotor
  1. The distributor cap is held on by two screws or clips. Release them with a screwdriver and lift the cap straight up and off, with the wires attached.
  2. Inspect the cap for cracks, carbon tracks, or a worn center contact.
  3. Pull the ignition rotor straight up to remove (remove screws if so equipped). Replace it if its contacts are worn, burned, or pitted. Do not file the contacts. To replace, press it firmly onto the shaft. It only goes on one way, so be sure it is fully seated (install screws if so equipped).
  4. Inspect the plug wires for cracks or brittleness, replace them if necessary. Transfer the wires from the old distributor cap to the new one. Be sure to place them on the correct terminals.
  5. Install the distributor cap and tighten the two screws or engage clips properly.
Ignition Coil and Ballast Resistor
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove any components necessary to access the coil.
  3. Tag and disconnect all electrical leads.
  4. Remove any mounting bolts then the ignition coil.

    To install:

  5. Install the coil assembly in position and tighten the mounting bolts.
  6. Connect all wires to the coil assembly.
  7. Install any components removed during disassembly.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable.
Crank Angle Sensor

Please refer to Section 4 for removal and installation of the crank angle sensor.
