To change the bulb on any of the front lamps on a Mitsubishi, remove the mounting
screws holding either the lens to the reflector or the lighting unit to the
bodywork. If the lens comes off separately, wear gloves to remove the bulb.
Very small bulbs such as side markers generally pull straight out of the socket;
larger round bulbs such as turn signal lamps usually twist counterclockwise
to remove.
Install the new lamp. Note that the socket for some turn signal bulbs have
two different length guide grooves; the lamp only fits correctly one way. (While
it is possible to install it wrong, doing so would require a lot of force. If
you find that you're pushing on the bulb with no results during installation,
you've probably got it reversed.) These bulbs should install easily with a gentle
push into the socket and a quarter turn clockwise. Reassemble the lens, paying
careful attention to the placement of any gaskets and seals. These are very
important in keeping out dirt and water.

Newer models have the lens bonded to the reflector to prevent moisture intrusion.
Either release the spring from behind the assembly (under the hood) or remove
the retaining screws if visible from the outside. Carefully work the assembly
loose from the body work, always being wary of the hidden clip or bracket. If
you break one of these clips, the lamp will not stay put when you reinstall
it.
When the assembly is free of the car, the socket may be removed with a twist
counterclockwise. Install the bulb and insert the assembly back into the housing.
Fit the whole thing back onto the bodywork, engaging any clips or hooks. Install
the retaining screws or the tension spring as necessary.
The older Pick-ups and Monteros use separate side marker assemblies, whose
lenses may be removed with two screws, and tail light assemblies. The newer
(1990 and newer) vehicles use one wrap-around combination light.
The tail, brake and turn lamps usually all fit into one integrated assembly.
It is wise to identify the position of the light being changed from the outside
of the vehicle before confronting 5 or 6 sockets in the back of the unit. Simply
knowing the bad bulb is third from the left can save a large amount of time.

- Remove the retaining screws holding the lamp assembly to the bodywork and
pull the assembly free.
- Remove the socket from the rear of the reflector (or simply change the bulb
if only the lens came off).
- Examine the holder; usually they are quarter-turn sockets, but a variety
of retainers may be found.
- Carefully remove the socket from the reflector and change the bulb. Almost
all rear lamps are the twist out type.
- Fit the bulb and socket into the housing. Normally, the socket will only
fit one way due to plastic guides or keys.
- Connect the locking device or tab if one was released and reinstall the
cover or trim panel.
- After replacing the lightbulb, carefully fit the unit back in place with
the gaskets correctly positioned.
- Install and tighten the screws.
NOTE: The high mounted stop light on the Pick-ups does not
have individual replaceable bulbs; the whole assembly will need to be replaced.
- Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable from the battery.
- Remove the two mounting screws holding the stop light assembly to the bracket.
- Pull the high-mount brake light assembly, the cover and the screw grommets
off of the bracket.
- Disconnect the wiring harness.

- Set the cover in place on the bracket and pull the wiring harness through
it.
- Plug the harness to the back connector of the stop light assembly and set
the assembly in place.
- Secure the entire unit in place with the two retaining screws.
- Connect the negative (-) battery cable to the battery.
The high-mount brake light on the Monteros is mounted to the inside of the
back door, right above the window.
- Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable from the battery.
- Loosen and remove the two mounting screws.
- Pull the cover and the socket assembly out of the stop light unit.
- Pull the bulbs out of the socket assembly.
- Push the new bulb into the socket assembly, then push the socket assembly
into the stop light unit.
- Place the cover over the socket assembly and secure it in place with the
two mounting screws.
- Reconnect the battery cable.

The dome lights, room lights, cargo lights and ceiling mounted map lights on
Monteros and Pick-up trucks are of the essentially same design. The light assemblies
are comprised of three components: the cover lens, light bulb, and socket assembly.
- To change the bulb or remove the fixture, pop the cover lens off of the
fixture. On most cases the cover lens simply snaps in place on the fixture,
but check to make certain that there are no mounting screws on the larger
light assemblies.
- Once the cover lens has been removed, the bulb can be extracted from the
light fixture.
- A new bulb can be inserted, or the fixture itself can be removed from the
headliner by removing the mounting screws holding it in place. Some ceiling
lights, however, are not held in place with screws, these type snap into the
headliner. Check for any mounting screws, and if none are found, the light
should be pulled out of the headliner. Make absolutely certain, that there
are no mounting screws holding the fixture in place before deciding to "yank''
it out of the headliner.
- After the fixture is loose, disconnect the electrical wiring to the fixture.

and Pick-up trucks — although some lights may not
look the same, the basic components function similarly

To install:
- Attach the wiring to the fixture, then either push the fixture in place
until it is held there by the retaining tabs or clips or mount it in place
with the mounting screws, depending on which type of light fixture it is.
- Install the new bulb and push the cover lens back onto the fixture.
The license plate lights on the Pick-ups and Monteros have basically the same
procedures for removal and installation, although they may look different. The
license plate light bulb is inside of the license plate garnish and is held
in place by the socket assembly.
- To change the bulb, remove the cover lenses retaining screws and remove
the lenses from the garnish.
- Pull the old bulbs out of the socket assembly and install the new bulbs.
- Secure the light lenses in place with their screws.
To remove the whole license light fixture assembly:
- Remove the lenses and old bulbs.
- After the lenses and bulbs are removed, remove the lens gaskets, which,
as long as they are still in good shape, can be reused upon installation.
- Before removing the license plate garnish, it may be necessary to remove
the rear door inside trim to get at the garnish's mounting screws.
- Unplug the socket assembly's wiring harness and remove the license plate
garnish mounting nuts. Some models, such as the 1992–95 Monteros, also
have clips holding the garnish in place, use a flat-tipped prytool to remove
these.
- Remove the garnish and socket assembly together from the back of the vehicle.
| Fig. 8: The single license plate bulb found on 1983–86
Pick-up trucks is a much simpler assembly than those on later model
Monteros
|
| Fig. 9: Before removal of the license plate light
garnish can be completed, the inside rear door trim and waterproof
film must be removed — 1992–95 Monteros
|
To install the license plate light fixture:
- Mount the garnish and socket assembly together onto the back of the vehicle's
door (make certain to route the wiring through the appropriate hole before
mounting the assembly).
- Tighten the mounting nuts until they are snug, then plug the wiring harness
connectors together.
- Install the rear door inside trim, if needed.
- Plug the new light bulbs into the socket assembly and, after placing the
gaskets in position, mount the light lenses with their retaining screws.
