For this procedure you will need the following new gaskets:
- Transmission control lever assembly gasket.
- Stopper plate gasket.
- Control housing cover gasket.
- Control housing gasket.
Some differences may exist from year to year, however the following procedures
can be applied to all 4-wheel drive Monteros and trucks.
- Unscrew the two shifter knobs off of the transmission and transfer control
lever assemblies.
- Remove the dust cover retaining plate mounting screws.
- Pull the dust cover retaining plate and the dust cover up off of the two
levers.
- Remove the transmission control lever assembly. Remove the control housing
mounting bolts and transmission control lever assembly mounting bolts with
the transfer shift lever in the "2H'' ("4H'' for 1992–95 Monteros) position
and remove the transmission control lever assembly with the control housing.
- Remove the two gaskets and the stopper plate from underneath of the transmission
control lever assembly. The gaskets will have to be replaced with a new one
upon installation.
- Remove the transfer shift lever assembly from the control housing.
- Remove the control housing cover and gasket from the control housing.
- Remove the control housing gasket.
WARNING
When the control lever assembly is removed, keep the transmission control
lever and the transfer control lever in the following positions: Transmission
control lever — neutral position, the transfer control lever — 2H
(2-wheel drive, high range) or 4H for 1992–95 Monteros. After the
control lever assembly has been removed, cover the hole with a cloth to
prevent entry of foreign substances into the extension housing.
- To install the assembly, set the control housing cover onto the control
housing, using a new gasket between the two parts, and tighten the retaining
bolts to 11–15 ft. lbs. (15–22 Nm).
- Install the transfer shift lever assembly. Make sure that the transfer lever
assembly mounting on the transmission side is in the position shown in the
illustration.

- Install the two gaskets and the stopper plate onto the control housing,
then set the transmission control lever assembly into the control housing,
making sure that the bottom of the shifter sets in the shifter bushing (in
the transmission). Tighten the retaining bolts to 11–15 ft. lbs. (15–22
Nm).
- Install the shift lever cover, the dust cover retaining plate and dust cover
over the shift levers. Mount the to the bracket with the retaining screws.
- Screw the shift lever knobs back onto the levers, only tighten them until
they are snug, otherwise the knobs' threads might become stripped.
For this procedure, new control lever and stopper plate gaskets will be needed.
There may be some slight differences from year to year, however the following
procedure is basically the same for all rear-wheel drive trucks and Monteros.
- Unscrew the shift knob from the control lever.
- Loosen and remove the dust cover retaining plate screws, then pull the dust
cover and retaining plate off of the lever.
- Remove the three mounting bolts from the shift lever assembly.
- Pull the control lever assembly with the stopper plate off of the transmission.
- Remove the two gaskets and the stopper plate off of the under-side of the
control lever assembly.
- To Install the shifter assembly, apply the two gaskets and the stopper plate
to the under-side of the control lever assembly.

- Insert the control lever assembly into the transmission, taking care that
the lower arm-ball of the control lever fits into the bushing "cup'' inside
of the transmission.
- Install the three mounting bolts to hold the control lever in place. Tighten
the bolts to 5–8 ft. lbs. (7–11 Nm).
- Install the dust cover and dust cover retainer plate over the lever and
secure it in place with the screws.
- Screw the shifter knob back onto the lever until snug. Do not over-tighten
to knob, otherwise the knob's threads might strip.
