Shock Absorbers

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Loosen the lug nuts on the wheels where the shock absorbers are going to be removed. Only loosen the lug nuts a maximum of1/2of a turn.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle with jackstands under the vehicle's frame.
  3. Remove the rear wheel(s).
  4. Jack the rear axle up slightly, then remove the upper mounting nuts from the shock absorber. On the leaf spring rear-ends, pull the shock absorber upper mount off of the mounting stud. Make sure to note the locations of the various washers, bushings and nuts.
  5. Lower the rear axle. On coil spring rear-ends, this will pull the upper shock absorber mounting stud out of the mounting bracket. Remove the lower mounting bolt from the shock absorber.
  6. Remove the shock absorber from the vehicle.

Fig. 1: On the coil spring rear-end Monteros, install the upper shock absorber washers, bushings and nuts in the correct order

  7. To install, mount the shock absorber with the lower mounting bolt. Only tighten the lower bolt until snug.
  8. Raise the rear axle with the floor jack until the shock absorber upper mounting stud or boss is in line with the mounting component. On leaf spring rear-ends, only tighten the upper mounting bolt until snug. On coil spring rear-ends, tighten the upper shock absorber mounting nut so that the amount of threads showing above the second nut is 0.04–0.08 in. (1–2mm). Make sure the two uppermost of the two upper mounting nuts is tightened down onto the lower nut to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).

    WARNING
When tightening the nut, be careful not to bend the stud pin of the washer assembly.

  9. Lower the rear axle, install the wheel and lower the vehicle to the ground.
  10. Push the vehicle down a couple of times to settle the suspension.
  11. On coil spring rear-ends, tighten the lower mounting nut to 80–94 ft. lbs. (110–130 Nm) for 1989–91 Monteros and to 159–181 ft. lbs. (216–245 Nm) for 1992–95 Monteros. On leaf spring rear-ends, tighten the upper and lower mounting nuts to 13–18 ft. lbs. (18–25 Nm).
