Code No. P0616: Starter Relay Circuit Low Input

OPERATION
  • Power for starter drive is supplied from the battery to the starter relay.
  • Battery voltage is supplied to the starter relay coil terminal from the engine-ECU connector terminal STHI and is earthed to the engine-ECU connector terminal STLO from the starter relay.
  • When the starter relay is turned ON, battery voltage is supplied to the starter from the starter relay.

FUNCTION
  • The engine-ECU turns ON the starter relay. This supplies battery voltage to the starter.

TROUBLE JUDGEMENT
Check Conditions
  • After 2 seconds have passed since the ignition switch was turned to "ON" position.
  • Battery positive voltage is more than 6.3 V.
Judgement Criterion
  • Starter relay high or low voltage is less than 1 V for 2 seconds.

FAIL-SAFE AND BACKUP FUNCTION
  • None

PROBABLE CAUSES
  • Failed starter relay
  • Short circuit in starter relay circuit or loose connector contact
  • Failed engine-ECU

DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE
STEP 1. Check starter relay itself.
  • Starter relay check (Refer to GROUP 16 - Starting System - On-vehicle Service - Starter Relay Continuity Check ).
Is the check result normal?
Go to Step 2.
Replace the starter relay.

STEP 2. Check of short to earth in STHI line between starter relay connector and engine-ECU connector.
Is the check result normal?
Go to Step 3.
Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness.

STEP 3. Check of short to earth in STLO line between starter relay connector and engine-ECU connector.
Is the check result normal?
Go to Step 4.
Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness.

STEP 4. M.U.T.-IIISE diagnosis code
  • Reconfirmation of diagnosis code.
Is the diagnosis code set?
Replace the engine-ECU.
Intermittent malfunction (Refer to GROUP 00 - How to Use Troubleshooting/Inspection Service Points - How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunctions ).
