TOWING

Whenever you are being towed, make sure that the chain or rope is sufficiently long and strong. Attach the chain securely at a point on the frame or tow hook, never on a steering or suspension part. On the Subaru ff-1 and the 1300G use the front crossmember to secure the tow chain. On all other models a towing hook is provided, both in front and back. Never try to start the vehicle while towing, it might run into the back of the towing vehicle. Do not allow too much slack to collect in the tow line, the towed vehicle could run over it and cause damage to one or both vehicles. If the distance to be traveled is less than six miles (9 km),your Subaru may be towed with the front wheels on the ground. If longer than six miles (9 km),are to be traveled, or if the transaxle or running gear is damaged the front wheels must be raised or dollied.

The following precautions should be observed when towing the vehicle:

  1. Always place the transaxle in neutral and release the parking brake.
  2. Always unlock the steering wheel. The steering column lock is not designed to hold the front wheels straight while the vehicle is being towed, and damage to the lock or steering could occur.
  3. If towing with a rope or chain, go slowly and keep as little slack in the line as possible. Remember safety first.
