- Center the pointer in the scale, so that it is midway between A (Advance)
and R (Retard). Tighten the pointer bolt.
- Drive the car at about 14 mph (22 kph) in Fourth gear on a level road.
- Depress the accelerator pedal to the floor. A slight knocking sound should
be heard. As the speed increases, the noise should rapidly go away.
- If the knocking sound is loud or if it fails to disappear as speed increases,
retard the timing by loosening the pointer bolt and turning the distributor
so that the R (Retard) moves toward the pointer.
- If there is no knocking sound at all, loosen the pointer bolt and turn the
distributor so that the A (Advance) moves toward the pointer.
- After completing the adjustment, retighten the pointer bolt and recheck
the car.
