ADJUSTMENT

NOTE: There is no octane selector on 1974 and later models.

  1. Center the pointer in the scale, so that it is midway between A (Advance) and R (Retard). Tighten the pointer bolt.
  2. Drive the car at about 14 mph (22 kph) in Fourth gear on a level road.
  3. Depress the accelerator pedal to the floor. A slight knocking sound should be heard. As the speed increases, the noise should rapidly go away.
  4. If the knocking sound is loud or if it fails to disappear as speed increases, retard the timing by loosening the pointer bolt and turning the distributor so that the R (Retard) moves toward the pointer.
  5. If there is no knocking sound at all, loosen the pointer bolt and turn the distributor so that the A (Advance) moves toward the pointer.
  6. After completing the adjustment, retighten the pointer bolt and recheck the car.
