- Remove the negative (-) battery cable.
- Remove the spare tire from the engine compartment.
- Raise the front of the vehicle and safely support it with jackstands.
- Drain the fluid from the system by removing the line flare nuts from the
center of the power steering gearbox and turning the steering wheel from left
to right.
- Loosen and remove the drive belt. See the belt adjustment procedure that
follows.
- Disengage the hoses connected to the air cleaner and remove the air cleaner
assembly.
- Remove the engine oil dipstick.
- Remove any other interference that will prevent pump removal.
- Disconnect the fluid hoses from the back of the pump.
- Unfasten the pump mounting bolts/nuts and remove the pump.
- Installation is the reverse of removal.
- Fill the pump with fluid before starting the engine.
- Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
- Remove the spare tire.
- Drain the power steering fluid from the oil reservoir located on the pump
by siphoning the oil out.
- Loosen but do not remove the power steering pump pulley nut.
- Loosen the alternator mounting bolts, move the alternator toward the power
steering pump, and remove the belts.
- Remove the nut and pull off the pump pulley.
- Disconnect the oil pump line at the pipe using two wrenches. Use one wrench
to hold the pipe nut in place and use the other wrench to turn the other nut,
this prevents twisting or kinking the pipe.
- Loosen the clamp and disengage the line where it connects to the tank. Be
sure to keep oil off the belts.
- Unfasten the three bolts attaching the front of the pump to the mount and
remove it.
- To install reverse the removal process, but keep these points in mind:
- Do not twist hoses.
- Install and adjust the belts before tightening the power steering pulley
bolt.
- Fill the fluid reservoir with the specified fluid and have someone keep
it filled (use new fluid only). Idle the engine and turn the steering
wheel from lock-to-lock to force air out of the system.
