NOTE: When replacing the front hub bolts on vehicles with anti-lock
brakes, remove and replace only one wheel lug stud at a time to avoid misalignment
the speed sensor exciter ring.
- Raise and support the front of the vehicle safely using jackstands, then
remove the wheel.
- Remove the brake pads and caliper. Support the caliper aside using wire
or a coat hanger. For caliper removal and installation details, please refer
to Section 9 of this manual.
- Remove the outer wheel bearing and lift the rotor and hub off the axle.
For wheel bearing removal, installation and adjustment steps, please refer
to Section 1 of this manual.
- Remove the retainer bolts securing the hub to the rotor hat, and separate
the components.
- Support the hub, then drive the stud out using a hammer or an arbor press
or stud removal clamp.
To install:
- Clean the stud hole with a wire brush and start the new stud with a hammer
and drift pin. Do not use any lubricant or thread sealer.
- If necessary, finish installing the stud using a press or stud installation
clamp.
- Install the hub to the rotor using new bolts.
- Install the rotor on the vehicle, and adjust the wheel bearing. Install
the remaining components.
- Raise and support the vehicle safely using jackstands, then remove the wheel.
- Remove the brake drum. Refer to Section 9 for drum brake removal and installation
steps.
WARNING
Do not hammer the wheel stud out to remove it. This will ruin the wheel
bearing.
- Attach a stud removal clamp to the stud and press the stud out.
To install:
- Clean the hole with a wire brush and start the new stud into the hole. Do
not use any lubricant or thread sealer.
- With the stud straight in the mounting hole, complete the installation using
a stud installation clamp.
- If a stud installation clamp is not available, stack 4 or 5 washers onto
the stud and install the nut. Tighten the nut to draw the stud into place.
It should be easy to feel when the stud is seated.
- Install the brake drum and tire, then remove the jackstands and carefully
lower the vehicle.
