Front Crankshaft Seal

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1.8L Engine

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
2. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Negative battery cable
   • Loosen the water pump pulley mounting bolts
   • Loosen the alternator mounting bolts
   • Alternator belt
   • Water pump pulley bolts
   • Water pump pulley
   • Electrical harness from the oil pressure switch
   • Dipstick tube
   • Crankshaft pulley
   • Timing belt cover plate, if equipped
   • Timing belt cover bolts on the left, right and center covers
   • Timing belt covers
   • Timing belt. Refer to the timing belt unit repair section.
   • Timing belt crankshaft sprocket
   • Crankshaft seal from the oil pump housing

   To install:

3. Install or connect the following:
   • New crankshaft seal, using a suitable seal driver
   • Timing belt crankshaft sprocket and the timing belt. Refer to the timing belt unit repair section.
   • Timing belt covers on the engine using the mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
   • Timing belt cover plate, if removed
   • Crankshaft pulley and tighten the bolt to 69–76 ft. lbs. (93–103 Nm)
   • Dipstick tube
   • Electrical harness to the oil pressure switch
   • Water pump pulley and loosely install the mounting bolts
   • Drive belt and adjust the tension as necessary
4. Tighten the alternator mounting bolts.
5. Tighten the water pump pulley mounting bolts.
6. Connect the negative battery cable.

2.2L Engine

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
2. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Negative battery cable
   • Accessory drive belts
   • Power steering pump and alternator
   • Air conditioner compressor brackets
3. Secure the crankshaft pulley with tool No. 499977000.
4. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Crankshaft pulley bolt and pulley
   • Timing belt cover mounting bolts
   • Belt covers
   • Timing belt. Refer to the timing belt unit repair section.
   • Timing belt crankshaft sprocket
   • Crankshaft seal from the oil pump housing

   To install:

5. Using a suitable seal driver, install a new crankshaft seal.
6. Install or connect the following:
   • Timing belt crankshaft sprocket and timing belt. Refer to the timing belt unit repair section.
   • Belt covers and tighten the bolts to 36–48 inch lbs. (4–5 Nm)
   • Crankshaft pulley and tighten the bolt to 69–76 ft. lbs. (93–103 Nm)
   • Power steering pump, alternator, air conditioning compressor and associated brackets
   • Accessory drive belts
   • Negative battery cable

2.5L Engine

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
2. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Negative battery cable
   • Radiator electric fan motor wiring connectors
   • Coolant reservoir tank
   • 4 bolts that secure the radiator shroud, then remove the fan assembly
3. Position the No. 1 piston to Top Dead Center (TDC) of its compression stroke.
4. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Accessory drive belt cover
   • Air conditioning compressor drive belt and tensioner
5. Secure the crankshaft pulley with tool No. ST499977000.
6. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Crankshaft pulley bolt and pulley
   • Left timing belt cover mounting bolts and the left cover
   • Right timing belt cover mounting bolts and the right cover
   • Center timing belt cover mounting bolts and the center cover
   • Timing belt. Refer to the timing belt unit repair section.
   • Timing belt crankshaft sprocket
   • Crankshaft seal from the oil pump housing

   To install:

7. Install or connect the following:
   • New crankshaft seal, using a suitable seal driver
   • Timing belt crankshaft sprocket and install the timing belt. Refer to the timing belt unit repair section.
   • Center, right, then the left timing belt covers. Tighten the bolts to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
   • Crankshaft pulley and tighten the bolt to 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm)
   • Air conditioning compressor drive belt tensioner and the drive belts
   • Fan shroud and fan motor assembly
   • Accessory drive belt cover
   • Negative battery cable

3.3L Engine

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
2. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Negative battery cable
   • Drive belts
   • Nut securing the power steering pump pulley and the pulley
   • Alternator and belt cover bracket
   • Power steering pump bracket
   • Air conditioning belt tensioner bracket
   • Air conditioning compressor and set it aside with the lines attached
   • Air conditioning compressor bracket
   • Crankshaft pulley bolt
   • Crankshaft pulley
   • Timing belt cover mounting bolts and the left, right and center covers
   • Timing belt. Refer to the timing belt unit repair section.
   • Timing belt crankshaft sprocket
   • Crankshaft seal from the oil pump housing

   To install:

3. Install or connect the following:
   • New crankshaft seal, using a suitable driver
   • Timing belt crankshaft sprocket and install the timing belt. Refer to the timing belt unit repair section.
   • Center, right and left covers. Tighten the mounting bolts to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
   • Crankshaft pulley and tighten the mounting bolt to 115 ft. lbs. (157 Nm)
   • Air conditioning compressor bracket
   • Air conditioning compressor
   • Power steering pump bracket
   • Alternator and belt cover bracket
   • Power steering pump pulley and pulley mounting nut
   • Drive belts
   • Negative battery cable
