
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning
of this section.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
- Hood
- Spare tire and tire bracket
- Relieve the fuel system pressure.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
- Negative battery cable
- Air cleaner assembly
- Fuel system hoses
- Evaporative emissions system hoses
- Cruise control vacuum hoses
- Master-Vac® vacuum hoses
- Air intake shutter vacuum hoses
- Heater air intake door vacuum hoses
- Alternator wiring
- Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve wiring
- Thermoswitch wiring
- Cooling fan wiring, if equipped
- Air conditioning condenser wiring
- Ignition coil wiring
- Main engine harness wiring
- Spark plug wires
- Engine ground strap
- Fusible link assembly
- Accelerator linkage
- Windshield washer reservoir and position it behind the right strut tower
- Remove the power steering pump by removing or disconnecting the following:
- Alternator pivot and mounting bolts
- Drive belt
- Pulley retainer bolts and pulley from the power steering pump
- Power steering pump-to-engine bolts and clamp
- Engine oil filler tube and brace
- Power steering pump and secure it to the bulkhead without disconnecting
the pressure lines
- Remove or disconnect the following:
- Air intake duct
- Air intake-to-flow meter line and cover the openings
- Horizontal damper and clip
- Temperature sensor harness
- Center exhaust section
- Torque converter/flywheel cover
- Oxygen sensor (O2S) electrical connector
- Torque converter-to-flexplate bolts, if equipped with automatic transaxle
- Using a hoist and suitable engine lift, connect the hoist to the crankshaft
damper bracket and lifting eye. Support the engine, but do not lift. Remove
the upper engine-to-transaxle bolts; leave the starter in place.
- Drain the engine coolant into a suitable container.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
- Radiator hoses
- Transaxle cooler lines
- Radiator
- Drain the crankcase oil into a suitable container.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
- Engine oil cooler lines
- Heater hoses from the side of the engine
- Front engine mount
- Lower engine-to-transaxle nuts
- Position a jack under the transaxle, then raise the engine/transaxle slightly.
Pull the engine forward and carefully raise the engine out of the engine compartment.
To install:
- Install or connect the following:
- Engine, push the engine rearward and engage it with transaxle
- Front engine mount
- Heater hoses
- Oil cooler lines
- Radiator
- Transaxle oil cooler lines
- Radiator hoses
- Upper engine-to-transaxle bolts, then remove the engine lifting fixture.
Tighten the bolts to 34–40 ft. lbs. (44–52 Nm).
- Torque converter-to-driveplate bolts, if removed. Tighten bolts one
at a time: 17–20 ft. lbs. (22–26 Nm).
- O2S sensor electrical connector
- Torque converter cover
- Exhaust pipe and hanger bolts
- Rear cover
- Temperature sensor connector
- Install the remaining exhaust components, adhering to the following torque
specifications:
- Exhaust system-to-transaxle bolt: 18–25 ft. lbs. (24–34
Nm)
- Exhaust system hanger bolts: 10–13 ft. lbs. (13–18 Nm)
- Rear exhaust pipe joint nuts: 10–13 ft. lbs. (13–18 Nm)
- Install or connect the following:
- Horizontal damper and clip
- Air intake-to-flow meter line
- Air intake duct and tighten the hose clamps
- Upper cover
- Install the power steering pump by installing or connecting the following:
- Power steering pump on the mounting bracket
- Engine oil filler pipe brace
- Power steering pump-to-engine bolts and clamp. Tighten the bolts to 22–36
ft. lbs. (29–47 Nm).
- Pulley on the power steering pump. Tighten the retainer bolts to 31–46
ft. lbs. (40–60 Nm).
- Alternator belt and tension the belt. Tighten the alternator pivot and mounting
bolts.
- Install or connect the following:
- Windshield washer reservoir
- Crankshaft damper by tightening the nuts on the body side of the damper
until the clearance is 0.08 in. (2mm). Tighten the locknuts to 72–108
inch lbs. (8–12 Nm).
- Spark plug wires
- Engine ground strap
- Fusible link assembly
- Main engine harness
- Alternator wiring
- EGR connector
- Thermoswitch wiring
- Electric fan connector
- Air conditioning condenser wiring
- Ignition coil connector(s)
- Cruise control vacuum hoses
- Master-Vac® hoses
- Air intake shutter hoses
- Heater air intake door hose(s)
- Fuel system hoses
- Evaporative emissions system hoses
- Adjust the accelerator pedal so there is 0.4–1.2 in. (10–30mm)
between the pin and stop. Adjust the cable end-play to 0–0.08 in. (0–2mm)
on the actuator side.
- Install or connect the following:
- Air cleaner assembly
- Negative battery cable
- Spare tire and spare tire bracket
- Hood
- Refill the crankcase with oil, the radiator with coolant and check the transmission
fluid. Start the engine and check for leaks.
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning
of this section.
- Relieve the fuel system pressure.
- Drain the engine oil and coolant into suitable containers.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
- Battery cables
- Battery from the vehicle
- Radiator hoses
- Fan motor harness
- Radiator
- If equipped with air conditioning, discharge the system using an approved
recovery/recycling machine. Disconnect and cap the lines from the compressor.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
- Air intake duct
- Air cleaner element and upper cover
- Evaporator canister and bracket
- Oxygen sensor (O2S) connector
- Engine ground terminal
- Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor connector
- Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor connector
- Knock sensor connector
- Alternator connector and terminal
- Air conditioning compressor connectors, if equipped
- Accelerator cable
- Cruise control cable, if equipped
- Clutch release spring, clutch cable and hill holder cable, if equipped
with a manual transaxle
- Brake booster hose(s)
- Heater inlet and outlet hoses
- Alternator drive belt
- Spark plug wires from left side of engine
- Power steering pump line bracket
- Power steering pump, leave the lines connected and position aside
- Exhaust Y-pipe
- Lower starter nuts
- Lower engine-to-transaxle nuts
- Front engine mount-to-crossmember nuts
- Starter
- If equipped with an automatic transaxle, perform the following:
- Remove the torque converter service hole plug.
- Rotate the engine. Remove the torque converter-to-drive plate bolts
as they become accessible.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
- Pitching stopper
- Fuel delivery, return and evaporation hoses
- Support the engine with a suitable lifting device attached to the engine
lifting eyes.
- Slightly raise the engine.
- Raise the transaxle with a floor jack.
- Slowly remove the engine from the vehicle.
To install:
- Apply a small amount of grease to the splines of the mainshaft.
- Position the engine in the engine compartment and align it with the transaxle.
- Install or connect the following:
- Engine upper bolts: 34–40 ft. lbs. (44–54 Nm)
- Remove the lifting device and floor jack.
- Install or connect the following:
- Pitching stopper and tighten the bolts to the following specifications:
- Body side: 49 ft. lbs. (67 Nm).
- Bracket side: 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
- If equipped with an automatic transaxle, perform the following:
- Install the torque converter-to-drive plate bolts while rotating the
engine, and tighten to 20 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
- Install the service hole cover.
- Install or connect the following:
- Evaporator canister and bracket
- Power steering pump. Torque retainers to 22–36 ft. lbs. (29–47
Nm).
- Drive belt, adjust tension
- Starter. Tighten bolts to 34–40 ft. lbs. (44–52 Nm).
- Lower engine-to-transaxle nuts. Tighten to 34–40 ft. lbs. (44–52
Nm).
- Lower engine mounting nuts. Tighten to 61 ft. lbs. (83 Nm) in the inner
most elliptical hole in the front crossmember so the clearance is 0.16–0.24
in. (4–6mm).
- Exhaust Y-pipe with new gaskets and nuts
- Brake booster hose
- Heater inlet and outlet hoses
- Accelerator and the cruise control cables, if equipped
- If equipped with a manual transaxle, install the following:
- Clutch release spring
- Clutch cable
- Hill holder cable
- Install or connect the following:
- Engine harness connectors
- O2sensor connector
- Engine ground terminal
- CKP sensor connector
- CMP sensor connector
- Knock sensor connector
- Alternator connector and terminal
- Air conditioning compressor connectors, if equipped
- Air cleaner element and cover
- Air conditioning lines, if equipped, with new O-rings. Tighten the bolts
to 23 ft. lbs. (31 Nm).
- Radiator
- Engine cover
- Battery
- Fill the engine with the recommended oil.
- Fill and bleed the cooling system.
- Charge the air conditioning system using an approved recovery/recycling
machine.
- Adjust the clutch cable.
- If equipped, check the automatic transaxle fluid level and add Dexron® II
if necessary.
- Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Check
for leaks.
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning
of this section.
- Remove the hood.
- Release the fuel system pressure.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
- Negative battery cable
- Underbody cover
- Drain the engine coolant.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
- Discharge the air conditioning system using an approved recovery/recycling
machine.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
- Air conditioning lines and plug them
- Air cleaner assembly
- Accelerator cable
- Cruise control cable
- All wiring harnesses and cables
- Evaporative canister
- Evap vacuum hoses
- Evap bracket
- Exhaust system from the exhaust manifold
- Power steering lines
- Automatic transaxle cooler lines from the radiator
- Lower side of engine-to-transaxle nuts
- Starter
- Front cushion rubber-to-subframe nuts
- Torque converter retainer bolts
- Torque converter from the driveplate
- Pitching stopper and bracket
- Fuel delivery hose
- Fuel return hose
- Evaporation hoses
- Support the engine with a suitable lifting device and the transaxle with
a suitable transmission jack.
- Remove the bolts that secure the engine to the transaxle.
- Slowly raise the engine and remove from the vehicle.
To install:
- Install or connect the following:
- Engine to the transaxle and tighten the bolts that secure the right
upper side of the engine to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
- Remove the lifting device and transmission jack.
- Install or connect the following:
- Pitching stopper and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
- Torque converter to drive plate bolts and tighten to 19 ft. lbs. (25
Nm)
- All hoses disconnected earlier
- Evaporative canister and bracket
- Radiator
- Coolant lines
- Lower side of the engine to transaxle nuts. Tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50
Nm).
- Starter and wiring. Tighten the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
- Front cushion rubber-to-subframe nuts. Tighten to 50 ft. lbs. (84 Nm).
- Power steering and automatic transaxle cooler lines
- Exhaust system to the manifold
- Engine under cover
- Power steering lines
- Electrical harnesses
- Accelerator cable
- Cruise control cable
- Air conditioning hoses to the air conditioning compressor. Tighten to
18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
- Air intake system
- Negative battery cable
- Fill the cooling system with coolant.
- Fill the power steering system.
- Check the automatic transaxle oil level and add as required.
- Check the engine oil level.
- Charge the air conditioning system using an approved recovery/recycling
machine.
- Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Check
for leaks.
