REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1.8L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
  5. Remove the power steering pump by removing or disconnecting the following:
  6. Alternator pivot and mounting bolts
  7. Drive belt
  8. Pulley retainer bolts and pulley from the power steering pump
  9. Power steering pump-to-engine bolts and clamp
  10. Engine oil filler tube and brace
  11. Power steering pump and secure it to the bulkhead without disconnecting the pressure lines
  12. Remove or disconnect the following:
  13. Using a hoist and suitable engine lift, connect the hoist to the crankshaft damper bracket and lifting eye. Support the engine, but do not lift. Remove the upper engine-to-transaxle bolts; leave the starter in place.
  14. Drain the engine coolant into a suitable container.
  15. Remove or disconnect the following:
  16. Drain the crankcase oil into a suitable container.
  17. Remove or disconnect the following:
  18. Position a jack under the transaxle, then raise the engine/transaxle slightly. Pull the engine forward and carefully raise the engine out of the engine compartment.

    To install:

  19. Install or connect the following:
  20. Install the remaining exhaust components, adhering to the following torque specifications:
    1. Exhaust system-to-transaxle bolt: 18–25 ft. lbs. (24–34 Nm)
    2. Exhaust system hanger bolts: 10–13 ft. lbs. (13–18 Nm)
    3. Rear exhaust pipe joint nuts: 10–13 ft. lbs. (13–18 Nm)
  21. Install or connect the following:
  22. Install the power steering pump by installing or connecting the following:
  23. Power steering pump on the mounting bracket
  24. Engine oil filler pipe brace
  25. Power steering pump-to-engine bolts and clamp. Tighten the bolts to 22–36 ft. lbs. (29–47 Nm).
  26. Pulley on the power steering pump. Tighten the retainer bolts to 31–46 ft. lbs. (40–60 Nm).
  27. Alternator belt and tension the belt. Tighten the alternator pivot and mounting bolts.
  28. Install or connect the following:
  29. Windshield washer reservoir
  30. Crankshaft damper by tightening the nuts on the body side of the damper until the clearance is 0.08 in. (2mm). Tighten the locknuts to 72–108 inch lbs. (8–12 Nm).
  31. Spark plug wires
  32. Engine ground strap
  33. Fusible link assembly
  34. Main engine harness
  35. Alternator wiring
  36. EGR connector
  37. Thermoswitch wiring
  38. Electric fan connector
  39. Air conditioning condenser wiring
  40. Ignition coil connector(s)
  41. Cruise control vacuum hoses
  42. Master-Vac® hoses
  43. Air intake shutter hoses
  44. Heater air intake door hose(s)
  45. Fuel system hoses
  46. Evaporative emissions system hoses
  47. Adjust the accelerator pedal so there is 0.4–1.2 in. (10–30mm) between the pin and stop. Adjust the cable end-play to 0–0.08 in. (0–2mm) on the actuator side.
  48. Install or connect the following:
  49. Refill the crankcase with oil, the radiator with coolant and check the transmission fluid. Start the engine and check for leaks.
2.2L and 2.5L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  3. Drain the engine oil and coolant into suitable containers.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
  5. If equipped with air conditioning, discharge the system using an approved recovery/recycling machine. Disconnect and cap the lines from the compressor.
  6. Remove or disconnect the following:
  7. If equipped with an automatic transaxle, perform the following:
    1. Remove the torque converter service hole plug.
    2. Rotate the engine. Remove the torque converter-to-drive plate bolts as they become accessible.
  8. Remove or disconnect the following:
  9. Pitching stopper
  10. Fuel delivery, return and evaporation hoses
  11. Support the engine with a suitable lifting device attached to the engine lifting eyes.
  12. Slightly raise the engine.
  13. Raise the transaxle with a floor jack.
  14. Slowly remove the engine from the vehicle.

    To install:

  15. Apply a small amount of grease to the splines of the mainshaft.
  16. Position the engine in the engine compartment and align it with the transaxle.
  17. Install or connect the following:
  18. Remove the lifting device and floor jack.
  19. Install or connect the following:
    1. Body side: 49 ft. lbs. (67 Nm).
    2. Bracket side: 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  20. If equipped with an automatic transaxle, perform the following:
    1. Install the torque converter-to-drive plate bolts while rotating the engine, and tighten to 20 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
    2. Install the service hole cover.
  21. Install or connect the following:
  22. If equipped with a manual transaxle, install the following:
  23. Install or connect the following:
  24. Fill the engine with the recommended oil.
  25. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  26. Charge the air conditioning system using an approved recovery/recycling machine.
  27. Adjust the clutch cable.
  28. If equipped, check the automatic transaxle fluid level and add Dexron® II if necessary.
  29. Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Check for leaks.
3.3L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove the hood.
  3. Release the fuel system pressure.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
  5. Drain the engine coolant.
  6. Remove or disconnect the following:
  7. Discharge the air conditioning system using an approved recovery/recycling machine.
  8. Remove or disconnect the following:
  9. Support the engine with a suitable lifting device and the transaxle with a suitable transmission jack.
  10. Remove the bolts that secure the engine to the transaxle.
  11. Slowly raise the engine and remove from the vehicle.

    To install:

  12. Install or connect the following:
  13. Remove the lifting device and transmission jack.
  14. Install or connect the following:
  15. Fill the cooling system with coolant.
  16. Fill the power steering system.
  17. Check the automatic transaxle oil level and add as required.
  18. Check the engine oil level.
  19. Charge the air conditioning system using an approved recovery/recycling machine.
  20. Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Check for leaks.
