Fuel Pump

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1.8L, 2.2L and 2.5L Engines

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
2. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
4. On the 2000–01 Legacy, perform the following:
   1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
   2. Remove the front side fuel tank cover.
   3. Drain the fuel tank into a suitable container.
   4. Tighten the drain plug to 14–24 ft. lbs. (19–33 Nm).
   5. Install the front side fuel tank cover Tighten the retainers to 9.4–16.6 ft. lbs. (13–23 Nm).
5. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Rear seat bottom, to reach the fuel pump access cover, if not already done
6. On Legacy models, fold the seat back, then roll the floor mat back.
7. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Fuel pump cover mounting bolts and the cover
   • Electrical harness from the pump assembly

   NOTE: Label the fuel lines before disconnecting them from the pump.

   • Fuel lines from the fuel pump
   • 8 fuel pump mounting nuts
   • Fuel pump assembly from the tank

   To install:

8. Install or connect the following:
   • New gasket
   • Fuel pump assembly into the fuel tank and secure with the mounting nuts. Tighten the nuts to 24–48 inch lbs. (3–6 Nm).
   • Electrical harness to the fuel pump assembly
   • Fuel lines to the pump assembly, then tighten the clamps and fittings
   • Fuel pump service cover and cover mounting bolts
   • Rear seat bottom
   • Negative battery cable
9. Start the engine and check for leaks.

3.3L Engine

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
2. Fold down the rear seat back and fold the floor mat back.
3. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Access cover
4. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
5. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Negative battery cable
   • 4 hoses from the fuel sender assembly, tag first
   • Fuel sender retaining cap using 42911PA000
   • Left side fuel meter assembly
   • Right side fuel meter assembly
   • Fuel pump assembly

   To install:

6. Install or connect the following:
   • Fuel pump assembly
   • Right side fuel meter assembly
   • Left side fuel meter assembly
   • Bracket covers
   • Fuel sender retaining cap using 42911PA000
   • 4 hoses to the sender assembly
   • Electrical harness to the sender assembly
   • Fuel pump access cover and floor mat
   • Negative battery cable
7. On the 2000–01 Legacy, fill the fuel tank with the fuel that was drained during removal.
