Halfshaft

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Except SVX

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
2. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Negative battery cable
   • Wheel
   • Axle nut, unstake the nut before attempting removal
   • Stabilizer link from the transverse link
   • Transverse link arm from the knuckle
   • Halfshaft-to-transaxle roll/spring pin and discard it
   • Sway bar bracket

     Using a special puller tool, press the axle shaft from the spindle housing

     Use 2 8mm bolts (arrows) to loosen the rotor from the spindle housing

     Using a special tool to separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle

     Remove the transverse link arm from the spindle housing

     Be sure to identify the correct halfshaft

   • Halfshaft from the transaxle
   • Halfshaft from the hub using puller 92707000

   To install:

3. Install or connect the following:
   • Halfshaft into the hub
4. Using installer 922431000 and adapter 927390000, pull the halfshaft through the hub.
5. Install or connect the following:
   • Temporarily tighten a new axle nut
   • Align the halfshaft roll/spring pin hole
   • Halfshaft onto the transaxle
   • New pin.
   • Transverse link to the knuckle and tighten a new self-locking nut to 29–43 ft. lbs. (39–59 Nm)
   • Sway bar bracket
   • New axle nut to 152 ft. lbs. (206 Nm) and stake the nut
   • Wheel
   • Negative battery cable

     Before loosening the strut-to-housing bolts (arrows), matchmark the camber adjustment bolt and strut

     Removing the ABS sensor

SVX

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
2. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Negative battery cable
   • Tire and wheel assembly
   • Unstake and remove the axle nut
   • Sway bar link from the sway bar
   • Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) sensor bracket from the strut
   • Brake hose bracket bolt and bracket from the strut
3. Matchmark the sway bar lever to the sway bar.
4. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Sway bar lever
   • Sway bar bracket, loosen
   • Lower ball joint pinch bolt
5. Drive out the spring pin securing the halfshaft to the transaxle. Discard the spring pin.
6. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Ball joint from the steering knuckle
   • Halfshaft from the transaxle
   • Halfshaft from the vehicle

   To install:

7. Install or connect the following:
   • Halfshaft into the steering knuckle
   • Inboard end on the halfshaft to the transaxle. Be sure the spring pin holes line up.
   • New spring pin
   • Ball joint to the steering knuckle
8. Tighten the ball joint pinch bolt to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).
9. Tighten the sway bar bracket.
10. Sway bar lever with the matchmarks in alignment, tighten the mounting bolt to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm)
11. Brake hose bracket to the strut and tighten the mounting bolt
12. ABS sensor to strut bracket
13. Sway bar to the sway bar link
14. Axle nut and tighten to 137 ft. lbs. (187 Nm)
15. Dust cap
16. Tire and wheel assembly
17. Negative battery cable
18. Check the front end alignment and adjust as necessary.
