- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning
of this section.
- Relieve the fuel system pressure.
- Drain the engine oil and coolant into suitable containers.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
- Battery cables
- Battery from the vehicle
- Radiator hoses
- Fan motor harness
- Radiator
- If equipped with air conditioning, discharge the system using an approved
recovery/recycling machine. Disconnect and cap the lines from the compressor.
- Air intake duct
- Air cleaner element and upper cover
- Evaporator canister and bracket
- Oxygen (O2S) sensor connector
- Engine ground terminal
- Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor connector
- Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor connector
- Knock Sensor (KS) connector
- Alternator connector and terminal
- Air conditioning compressor connectors, if equipped
- Accelerator cable
- Cruise control cable, if equipped
- Clutch release spring, clutch cable and hill holder cable, if equipped
with a manual transaxle
- Brake booster hose(s)
- Heater inlet and outlet hoses
- Alternator drive belt
- Spark plug wires from left side of engine
- Power steering pump line bracket
- Power steering pump, leave the lines connected and position aside
- Exhaust Y-pipe
- Lower starter nuts
- Lower engine-to-transaxle nuts
- Front engine mount-to-crossmember nuts
- Starter
- If equipped with an automatic transaxle, perform the following:
- Remove the torque converter service hole plug.
- Rotate the engine. Remove the torque converter-to-drive plate bolts
as they become accessible.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
- Pitching stopper
- Fuel delivery, return and evaporation hoses
- Support the engine with a suitable lifting device attached to the engine
lifting eyes.
- Slightly raise the engine.
- Raise the transaxle with a floor jack.
- Slowly remove the engine from the vehicle.
To install:
- Apply a small amount of grease to the splines of the mainshaft.
- Position the engine in the engine compartment and align it with the transaxle.
- Install or connect the following:
- Engine upper bolts: 34-40 ft. lbs. (44-54 Nm)
- Remove the lifting device and floor jack.
- Install or connect the following:
- Pitching stopper and tighten the bolts to the following specifications:
- Body side: 49 ft. lbs. (67 Nm).
- Bracket side: 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
- If equipped with an automatic transaxle, perform the following:
- Install the torque converter-to-drive plate bolts while rotating the
engine, and tighten to 20 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
- Install the service hole cover.
- Install or connect the following:
- Evaporator canister and bracket
- Power steering pump. Torque retainers to 22-36 ft. lbs. (29-47 Nm).
- Drive belt, adjust tension
- Starter. Tighten bolts to 34-40 ft. lbs. (44-52 Nm).
- Lower engine-to-transaxle nuts. Tighten to 34-40 ft. lbs. (44-52 Nm).
- Lower engine mounting nuts. Tighten to 61 ft. lbs. (83 Nm) in the inner
most elliptical hole in the front crossmember so the clearance is 0.16-0.24
in. (4-6mm).
- Exhaust Y-pipe with new gaskets and nuts
- Brake booster hose
- Heater inlet and outlet hoses
- Accelerator and the cruise control cables, if equipped
- If equipped with a manual transaxle, install the following:
- Clutch release spring
- Clutch cable

- Install or connect the following:
- Engine harness connectors
- O2sensor connector
- Engine ground terminal
- CKP sensor connector
- CMP sensor connector
- Knock sensor connector
- Alternator connector and terminal
- Air conditioning compressor connectors, if equipped
- Air cleaner element and cover
- Air conditioning lines, if equipped, with new O-rings. Tighten the bolts
to 23 ft. lbs. (31 Nm).
- Radiator
- Engine cover
- Battery
- Fill the engine with the recommended oil.
- Fill and bleed the cooling system.
- Charge the air conditioning system using an approved recovery/recycling
machine.
- Adjust the clutch cable.
- If equipped, check the automatic transaxle fluid level and add Dexron® II
if necessary.
- Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Check
for leaks.
