With Drum Brakes

To Remove:

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
2. Safely raise and support the vehicle.
3. Release the parking brake.
   • Loosen the adjusting nut
4. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Ground cable from battery

     CAUTION
     Be certain to both loosen and retighten axle nuts after removing the wheel, to avoid wheel bearing damage.

   • Wheel cap
   • Wheels
   • Unlock and remove the axle nut
   • The brake drum from hub

     Note: If it is difficult to remove brake drum;

   • Remove the adjusting hole cover from the back plate,
   • Turn the adjusting screw using a slot-type screwdriver until the brake shoe separates from the drum.

     Note: If brake drum is difficult to remove;

   • Drive it out by installing an 8-mm bolt into bolt hole in brake drum.
   • The brake hose from the wheel cylinder, using a flare-net wrench

     CAUTION
     Cover open end of the wheel cylinder to prevent the entry of foreign materials.

   • The parking brake cable end
   • The rear stabilizer from the rear lateral link
   • The bolts, which secure trailing link assembly to the rear housing

     CAUTION
     Discard old self-locking nut. Replace with a new one.

   • The bolts, which secure lateral assembly to the rear housing

CAUTION
Discard old self-locking nut. Replace with a new one.

5. engage the BJ from the housing splines.
   • Remove the rear drive shaft assembly

     ST 28099PA100 Drive Shaft Remover

     Note: If it is hard to remove, use STs.

   • ST1 926470000 Axle Shaft Puller
   • ST2 927140000 Axle Shaft Puller Plate

   CAUTION
   Be careful not to damage the oil seal lip when removing rear drive shaft.

   When rear drive shaft is to be replaced, also replace inner oil seal with a new one

6. Remove the rear ABS sensor from the back plate (only vehicle equipped with ABS)
7. Remove the bolts, which secure the rear housing to the strut
   • Separate the two

To Install:

1. Install or connect the following:
   • The rear housing assembly and strut assembly

     CAUTION
     Use a new self-locking nut. Tightening torque: 196 Nm (20 kgf-cm, 145 ft. lbs.)

   • Fit the BJ (bell joint) to the rear housing splines

     CAUTION
     Be careful not to damage inner oil seal lip.

   • The rear housing assembly to the lateral link assembly

     CAUTION
     Use a new self-locking nut. Torque to: 101 ft. lbs., 397 kgf-cm, (137 Nm).

   • The rear housing assembly to the trailing link assembly

     CAUTION
     Use a new self-locking nut. Torque to: 83 ft. lbs., 152 kgf-cm, (113 Nm).

   • Connect the rear stabilizer to the rear lateral link

CAUTION
Use a new self-locking nut. Torque to: 33 ft. lbs., 50 kgf-cm, (44 Nm).

2. Install or connect the following:
   • The parking brake cable to the parking brake.
   • The brake pipe to the wheel cylinder
     1. Clean the brake line connection, using a flare nut wrench
   • The rear ABS sensor to the back plate (vehicles equipped with ABS)
   • The parking brake cable to the parking brake lever
   • The brake drum on the rear housing assembly
3. Bleed air from brake system.
4. Adjust the parking brake lever stroke by turning adjuster.
5. Pull the brake lever back, apply brakes.
6. While depressing brake pedal, tighten the axle nut.
   • Torque to: 137ft. lbs., 19 kgf-cm, (186 N)
7. Lock the axle nut after tightening.

   CAUTION
   Use a new axle nut.

   CAUTION
   Always tighten axle nut before installing the wheel on the vehicle. If the wheel is installed and comes in contact with the ground when the axle nut is loose, the wheel bearings may be damaged.

   CAUTION
   Be sure to tighten the axle nut to specified torque. Do not over tighten this may damage the wheel bearing.

8. Install the wheel and tighten the wheel nuts to specified torque.
   • Torque to: 65 lb.ft. (900 Kg.cm, 90 Nm)
