Axle Shaft Bearing and Seal

Removal and Installation

To Remove:

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
2. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
3. Safely raise and support the vehicle.
4. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Axle nut

     CAUTION
     Be sure to loosen and retighten axle nut after removing wheel from vehicle. Failure to follow this rule may damage wheel bearings.

   • Stabilizer link
   • Disc brake caliper from the housing, and suspend it from strut
   • Front drive shaft assembly from the hub

     CAUTION
     Be careful not to damage oil seal lip when removing front drive shaft. When replacing front drive shaft, also replace inner coil seal.

   • Disc rotor from the hub

   • Cotter pin and castle nut connecting tie-rod end to housing knuckle arm
   • Tie-rod ball joint from the knuckle arm
   • ABS sensor assembly and harness
   • Transverse link ball joint from the housing
5. After scribing an alignment mark on camber adjusting bolt head, remove bolts which connect housing and strut, and disconnect the housing from the strut.

To Install:

1. Install the transverse link ball joint to the housing.
   • Torque to: 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
2. While aligning alignment mark on camber adjusting bolt head, connect the housing and strut.

   CAUTION
   Use a new self-locking nut.

   • Torque to: 129 ft. lbs. (175 Nm)
3. Install or connect the following:
   • ABS sensor on the housing
     1. Torque to: 24.6 ft. lbs. (33 Nm)
   • Disc rotor on the hub
   • Disc brake caliper on the housing
     1. Torque to: 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm)
   • Front drive shaft
   • Stabilizer link
     1. Torque to: 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
   • Tie-rod end ball joint and knuckle arm with a castle nut, and insert the cotter pin into the tie-rod end
     1. Torque to: 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm) plus 60° until cotter pin hole is aligned with a slot in the nut
4. While depressing brake pedal, tighten the axle nut and lock it securely.
   • Torque to: 162 ft. lbs. (220 Nm)

   CAUTION
   Use a new axle nut. Always tighten axle nut before installing wheel on vehicle. If wheel is installed and comes in contact with ground when axle nut is loose, wheel bearings may be damaged.

5. Install the wheel and tighten the wheel nuts.
   • Torque to: 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm)
