To Remove:
- Park the vehicle on a level surface. Place the vehicle in PARK (automatic) or REVERSE (manual) with the engine OFF, and apply the parking brake. Chock the rear wheels to prevent movement.
- Loosen the lug nuts, but do not remove them until the vehicle is raised.
- Safely raise and support the front of the vehicle using jack stands, then remove the wheel.
- Remove the cotter pin and discard. Loosen the castellated nut to the end of the threads on the outer tie rod end.
- Place a tie rod fork (removal tool) between the tie rod end and the steering knuckle. Carefully hammer the tool into place until the tapered tool enters far enough to separate the tie rod, then remove the castellated nut from the tie rod and allow to drop freely.
- Mark the outer tie rod just above the jam nut with a reference line for installation.
- Loosen the retaining nuts on the tie rod sleeve.
- Hold the outer tie rod end with a wrench and loosen the tie rod end jam nut.
- Back the tie rod end jam nut off ONE FULL TURN ONLY.
- Remove the outer tie rod end from the tie rod adjusting sleeve.
To Install:
- Clean the threads on the tie rod sleeve.
- Transfer the installation reference mark from the old tie rod end to the new.
- Install the jam nut onto the tie rod end until it bottoms out on the tie rod end.
- Install the new tie rod end into the sleeve until the reference line is close to the installed position of the old tie rod end.
- Continue installing the tie rod end until the reference line is in contact with the jam nut.
- Place the outer tie rod end stud into the steering knuckle.
- Install the new castellated nut onto the outer tie rod end stud.
- Continue to tighten the castellated nut until a new cotter pin can be inserted through the hole in the stud. Install a new cotter pin.
- einstall the wheel and tire assembly. Torque the lug nuts the manufacturers' recommended torque specification.
- Check the alignment and set the toe adjustment to specification.
- Tighten the tie rod sleeve bolts, then tighten the jam nut.
