SRS AIRBAG
SIDE AIRBAG MODULE
EXPLODED VIEW
REMOVAL
WARNING:
The following service operations include the works which may affect the SRS airbag system. Before starting work, always be sure to confirm the precautions related to the SRS airbag system. (Refer to )
NOTE:
The following procedure is for LH side. Perform the same procedures for the RH side.
1. Precautions
WARNING:
Replace the separate type front seat backrest ASSY RH if the side airbag system is activated.
CAUTION:
After turning the ignition switch to OFF, you may have to wait for a while before disconnecting the battery terminals. Check appropriate precautions for battery terminal disconnection before proceeding. (Refer to )
2. Disconnection of the battery ground terminal
(1) Turn the ignition switch to OFF, disconnect the battery ground terminal, and then wait for 60 seconds before starting the work. (Refer to )
WARNING:
The air bag and pretensioner system are fitted with a backup power supply. If you start the work within 60 seconds after disconnecting the battery ground terminal, the air bag may be activated.
CAUTION:
To avoid damage to the molding, be sure to fully open the door glasses on both driver’s and passenger’s sides.
3. Removal of the front seat ASSY LH (Refer to )
4. Removal of the reclining adjuster release handle LH (Refer to )
5. Removal of the vertical adjuster handle LH (driver’s side) (Refer to )
6. Removal of the front seat cushion shield LH (Refer to )
7. Removal of the front seat cushion shield INN LH (Refer to )
8. Removal of the separate type front seat backrest ASSY LH (Refer to )
9. Removal of the separate type front seat backrest cover with pad (Refer to )
10. Removal of the side airbag module LH
(1) Release the two clamps and disconnect the wiring harness.
(2) Remove 2 nuts and remove the side airbag module LH.
WARNING:
·Do not reuse the removed nuts.
·If the seat frame ASSY is deformed or damaged, replace it with a new one.
INSTALLATION
WARNING:
The following service operations include the works which may affect the SRS airbag system. Before starting work, always be sure to confirm the precautions related to the SRS airbag system. (Refer to )
CAUTION:
·Be careful not to stain or damage the separate type front seat backrest cover during assembly. Do not reuse hog rings.
·Secure the hog rings using a hog ring pliers.
·Install the hog rings to the specified points securely and make sure that there is no wrinkle or twisting on the cover COMPL - front backrest.
NOTE:
The following procedure is for LH side. Unless otherwise specified, perform the same procedures for the RH side.
1. Installation of the side airbag module LH
WARNING:
·Do not reuse the removed nuts.
·If the seat frame ASSY is deformed or damaged, replace it with a new one.
(1) Before installation, inspect the following items and replace any faulty part with a new one.
·Make sure that there is no foreign matters on the side airbag module.
·Front seat, airbag module and mounting bracket are damaged or deformed.
·Harness and/or connector is cracked, deformed or broken.
·Harness wire is exposed.
(2) Check that the ignition switch is turned to OFF.
(3) Check that the battery ground terminal is disconnected.
WARNING:
After disconnecting the battery ground terminal, do not start the work before waiting for 60 seconds.
(4) Install the side airbag module RH with 2 new nuts.

Standard value:
Tightening torque=5.5N·m { 56kgf·cm} {4.1ft·lbf}
(5) Engage the two clamps to connect the wiring harness.
2. Installation of the separate type front seat backrest cover with pad (Refer to )
3. Installation of the separate type front seat backrest ASSY LH
4. Installation of the front seat cushion shield INN LH (Refer to )
5. Installation of the front seat cushion shield LH (Refer to )
6. Installation of the vertical adjuster handle LH (driver’s side) (Refer to )
7. Installation of the reclining adjuster release handle LH (Refer to )
8. Installation of the front seat ASSY LH (Refer to )
9. Connection of the battery ground terminal

Standard value:
Tightening torque=6.0N·m { 61kgf·cm} {4.4ft·lbf}
10. Inspection of the airbag warning light (Refer to )
DISPOSAL
1. Precautions for handling the device
WARNING:
The following service operations include the works which may affect the SRS airbag system. Before starting work, always be sure to confirm the precautions related to the SRS airbag system. (Refer to )
NOTE:
The following procedure is for LH side. Unless otherwise specified, perform the same procedures for the RH side.
2. Disposal of the side airbag module LH (for module only)
WARNING:
·Perform the operation outdoors on a level surface where safety can be ensured. Avoid performing the operation in residential and similar areas as much as possible.
·Before operating, notify people in the surrounding area because the airbag operation makes a loud noise.
(1) Removal of the side airbag module LH (Refer to )
NOTE:
Refer to the procedure until removal of the side airbag module LH.
(3) Activation of side airbag module LH
(b) Short the alligator clip and the terminal of SST (98299PA030).
(c) Connect the SST (98299CA000) to the connector for the side airbag module LH.
CAUTION:
Lock the SST (98299CA000) securely.
(d) As shown in the figure, place two tires on top of each other, and then pile the tire-mounted side airbag module LH, a tire, and a tire with disc wheel in that order.
(e) Using a wire with a diameter of 1.8 mm {0.07 in} or more (usual iron wire for general-purpose: corresponding to JIS SWM-B), wrap the entire tires twice or more without slack to secure them tightly.
CAUTION:
·Secure them so that the total load capacity becomes 1 t or more.
·Use waste tires and disc wheels for disposal operation.
(h) After ensuring the safety of the surrounding area, connect the alligator clip of the SST (98299PA030) to the battery ground terminal.
WARNING:
·Perform the operation outdoors on a level surface where safety can be ensured. Avoid performing the operation in residential and similar areas as much as possible.
·Before operation, notify people in the surrounding area because the operation makes a loud noise.
(i) Connect the terminal of the SST (98299PA030) to the battery positive terminal to activate the side airbag module LH.
WARNING:
·Before the operation, ensure that nobody is in the area.
·Before the operation, notify people near the operating area in a loud voice.
(4) Disposal of side airbag module LH
(a) Put an activated airbag (side airbag module) in a strong clear vinyl bag and seal the bag before disposal.
WARNING:
·Because some parts of an activated airbag (side airbag module) may be very hot (hundreds of degrees Celsius or more), leave it 40 minutes or more after operation.
·Do not put water on an activated airbag (side airbag module).
·Wear dustproof safety goggles and gloves when handling an activated airbag (side airbag module).
·Never discard any undeployed side airbag module LH.
·Be sure to wash your hands with water after completion of the operation.
3. Disposal of side airbag module (for module mounted on vehicle)
CAUTION:
·When disposing of a side airbag, do not use the customer’s vehicle to activate the airbag.
·When activating an airbag, follow the instructions below.
NOTE:
Prepare a battery as a power supply for activating the airbag.
(2) Disconnect the cable from the battery ground terminal.
WARNING:
To disable the SRS system, disconnect the battery ground terminal, and then wait for at least 60 seconds before starting the work.
(4) Activate the airbag.
(a) Check that nobody is in the vehicle and within a radius of 5 m {16.4 ft} from the vehicle.
(b) Connect the SST clip to the battery positive terminal.
(c) Connect the SST terminal to the battery ground terminal to activate the side airbag module.
WARNING:
·Because some parts of an activated airbag (side airbag module) may be very hot (hundreds of degrees Celsius or more), leave it 40 minutes or more after operation.
·Do not put water on an activated airbag (side airbag module).
·Wear dustproof safety goggles and gloves when handling an activated airbag (side airbag module).
·Never discard any undeployed airbag (side airbag module).
·Be sure to wash your hands with water after completion of the operation.
