FRONT SEAT OUTER BELT ASSY

REMOVAL
WARNING:
The following service operations include the works which may affect the SRS airbag system. Before starting work, always be sure to confirm the precautions related to the SRS airbag system. (Refer to )
NOTE:
The procedures described below are for the RH side. Perform the same procedures for the LH side.
1. Disconnection of the battery ground terminal
WARNING:
The air bag and pretensioner system are fitted with a backup power supply. If you start the work within 60 seconds after disconnecting the battery ground terminal, the air bag may be activated. (Refer to )
CAUTION:
To avoid damage to the molding, be sure to fully open the door glasses on both driver’s and passenger’s sides.
2. Removal of separate type rear seat cushion ASSY (Refer to )
3. Removal of the front door scuff plate RH (Refer to )
4. Removal of the front door opening trim weather strip RH
(1) Remove the front door opening trim weather strip RH to the extent that the quarter lower trim RH and the center pillar garnish RH can be removed.
5. Removal of quarter lower trim RH (Refer to )
6. Removal of quarter trim lid RH (Refer to )
7. Removal of the rear window side garnish RH (Refer to )
8. Removal of the quarter rear trim garnish FR RH (Refer to )
11. Removal of the front seat outer belt ASSY RH
(1) Loosen the bolt and disconnect the shoulder anchor part of the front seat outer belt ASSY RH.
(2) Using the fine flat tip screwdriver wrapped with protective tape, pull off the lock of the pretensioner connector to unlock it.

Unlock it.
(3) Using the fine flat tip screwdriver wrapped with protective tape, disconnect the pretensioner connector.
(4) Remove 2 bolts and the guide, and remove the front seat outer belt ASSY RH.
INSTALLATION
NOTE:
The procedures described below are for the RH side of a vehicle with the steering wheel on the right. Perform the same procedures for the LH side.
3. Connection of front seat outer belt ASSY RH
(1) Tighten the bolt to install the floor anchor part of the front seat outer belt ASSY RH.

Standard value:
Tightening torque=30N·m { 306kgf·cm} {22.1ft·lbf}
(2) Install the floor anchor cover.
4. Installation of the quarter rear trim garnish FR RH (Refer to )
5. Installation of the rear window side garnish RH (Refer to )
6. Installation of the quarter trim lid RH (Refer to )
7. Installation of the quarter lower trim RH (Refer to )
8. Installation of front door opening trim weather strip RH
9. Installation of the front door scuff plate RH (Refer to )
10. Installation of separate type rear seat cushion ASSY (Refer to )
11. Connection of the battery ground terminal

Standard value:
Tightening torque=6.0N·m { 61kgf·cm} {4.4ft·lbf}
12. Function inspection of the seat belt (Refer to )
13. Inspection of airbag warning light (Refer to )
DISPOSAL
WARNING:
Be sure to observe the following items. Failure to do so may result in personal injury.
·Because it may incorrectly activate, perform the pretensioner operation process before disposing of it.
·Wear protective goggles and earplugs during this procedure. Wash your hands after this procedure.
·The pretensioner will be extremely hot after activation. Do not touch it with your bare hands. Leave it for 40 minutes or more before disposing of it.
CAUTION:
·Perform the pretensioner operation process on a safe and level surface. Do not perform the operation process outdoors when it is rainy or windy.
·Do not drop or damage the pretensioner.
·Activating the pretensioner makes a loud noise such as an explosion. Warn the people nearby, and do not let anybody within a 5 m {16.4 ft} radius of the disposal site.
·After activation of the pretensioner, smoke may occur. Therefore, perform this operation process in a well-ventilated location without a smoke sensor.
·Do not make the operated pretensioner get wet.
·Wrap the operated pretensioner in a sealed vinyl bag and dispose of it.
·If, due to circumstances, you cannot perform the pretensioner operation process, contact your SUBARU dealer.
1. Operation process on the pretensioner unit
(1) Tilt the backrest forward, and move the front seat forward.
(2) Before beginning the procedure, turn the ignition switch to OFF, disconnect the battery ground terminal and wait 60 seconds or more.
(3) Remove the seat belt retractor. (Refer to )
(4) Cut the seat belt at a position as close as possible to the retractor.
(5) Short the terminal and the alligator clip of the airbag deployment tool.
CAUTION:
Keep the SST terminals short-circuited until just before the pretensioner operation is performed.

(6) Connect the airbag deployment tool (A) and the test harness adaptor D (B).

NOTE:
If the connector of the test harness adapter on the inflator side is melted, replace it with a repair connector (98299FJ010). (Refer to )
(7) Connect the connector of the test harness adaptor D to the pretensioner.
(9) Move the battery 5 m (16.4 ft) or more away from the tires, and ensure the safety of the surrounding area.
(11) Connect the other cable of the airbag deployment tool to the battery positive terminal (+) to activate the pretensioner.
CAUTION:
·The pretensioner will be extremely hot after the operation process. Leave it in a place where there are no people for 40 minutes or more before disposing of it.
·Do not make the operated pretensioner get wet.
NOTE:
The test harness adaptor connected to the pretensioner will be melted due to the high heat of the inflator operating.
If the connector section is melted, send for a repair connector, and reuse it after repair.
(12) Seal the operated pretensioner in a vinyl bag and dispose of it.
2. Disposal of the front seat outer belt ASSY (when it is installed in the vehicle)
WARNING:
·Wear dustproof safety goggles and gloves when handling a seat belt with an activated pretensioner.
·Be sure to wash your hands with water after completion of the operation.
·Do not make the seat belt with an activated pretensioner get wet.
·When activating the retractor (pretensioner), be sure to use the specified SST (SRS airbag activation tool). Perform this operation in a location that is not susceptible to electrical interference.
·When disposing of a seatbelt with pretensioner, do not use the customer’s vehicle to activate the pretensioner.
CAUTION:
·Never dispose of an unactivated seat belt.
·Activating the seat belt makes a loud noise such as an explosion. Perform this operation outdoors in a location that will not disturb local residents.
·When activating a seat belt pretensioner, perform the operation at least 5 m {16.4 ft} or more away from the seat belt.
·When activating a seat belt pretensioner, follow the instructions below.
NOTE:
Prepare a battery to use as the source of power for activating the seat belt pretensioner.
(2) Disconnect the cable from the battery ground terminal.
WARNING:
To disable the SRS system, disconnect the battery ground terminal, and then wait for at least 60 seconds before starting the work.
(3) Disconnect the seat belt pretensioner connector.
(a) Removal of the front door scuff plate (Refer to )
(b) Disconnection of the front door opening trim weather strip (Refer to )
(c) Removal of the quarter lower trim (Refer to )
(d) Using a flat heat screwdriver, pull out the locking button in the direction shown in the illustration to release the lock, and disconnect the pretensioner connector as in the illustration.

Unlock it.
NOTE:
Before using the flat head screwdriver, wrap tape around the tip.
(4) Connect the SST.
(b) Connect the following SSTs together.
SST     98299PA030 Airbag deployment tool)  98299SA010 Test harness adapter D)
(d) Move the SST parallel vinyl wires at least 5 m {16.4 ft} away from the front side window of the vehicle.

(e) Fully expand the parallel vinyl wires for activation, and then fully close the windows and trunk.
(f) Activate the pretensioner.
1. Check that nobody is in the vehicle and within a radius of 5 m {16.4ft} from the vehicle.
2. Connect the SST clip to the battery positive terminal.
3. Connect the SST terminal to the battery ground terminal to activate the pretensioner.
WARNING:
·Because some parts of an activated retractor (pretensioner) may be very hot (hundreds of degrees Celsius or more), leave it 40 minutes or more after operation.
·Do not make an activated retractor (pretensioner) get wet.
·Wear dustproof safety goggles and gloves when handling an activated retractor (pretensioner).
·Never dispose of an unactivated retractor (pretensioner).
·Be sure to wash your hands with water after completion of the operation.
