Additional Heater (If Equipped) System Description
Precautions: General safety (00)
System Description
Additional heater system consists of ECM, additional heater, three additional heater relays and Max hot switch (if equipped).
The function of each component is as follows:
•ECM and additional heater relay:
ECM operates the additional heater through the additional heater relays based on the vehicle condition data (engine speed, ECT, etc.).
•Additional heater:
Additional heater is of an electrothermal type and located just above the heater core.
ECM operates the additional heater through the additional heater relays based on the vehicle condition data (engine speed, ECT, etc.).
•Additional heater:
Additional heater is of an electrothermal type and located just above the heater core.
Operation Description
The time required to heat up engine coolant in diesel engine is longer than that in petrol engine.
As the heater system uses the heat of the engine coolant, this causes the passenger compartment to be heated rather slowly on the diesel model.
The additional heater system works when the engine coolant is still cold after engine start.
While the additional heater is working, it generates heat which raises the temperature of the air coming out from the HVAC unit.
This also has an effect of increasing the electric load of the engine (although within the specified load range), which in turn shortens the engine warm-up time.
The additional heater works under the following conditions:
•20 seconds elapsed after engine start
•Engine speed is 700 rpm or more
•Battery voltage is 12 V or more
•Outside air temperature is 10 °C (50 °F) or less
•Engine coolant temperature is 72 °C (161.6 °F) or less
•Blower motor is turned ON
•Max hot switch is at ON position (if equipped)
