Passenger Air Bag Deactivation Switch Description (If Equipped)

Precautions: Precautions for Air Bag System Service · Precautions for Handling and Storage of Air Bag System Components · Precautions for Disposal of Air Bag and Seat Belt Pretensioner · Precautions for Restraint · General safety (00)

The passenger air bag deactivation switch (1) is installed on the passenger side of the instrument panel. It is used to suspend the operation of passenger air bag (inflator) module for such cases as the child restraint is installed to the front passenger’s seat.
SDM determines whether to enable or disable operation of passenger air bag (inflator) module based on the air bag deactivation switch setting (Air bag ON/Air bag OFF). The deactivation switch setting can be changed in any ignition mode.
When ignition is set to “ON”, the SDM detects the setting position (Air bag ON/Air bag OFF) of the passenger air bag deactivation switch and determines whether to enable or disable operation of the passenger air bag (inflator) module. If deactivation switch is in Air bag OFF position, it turns on the “PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF” indicator (3) on instrument panel above the center console box to indicate that passenger air bag (inflator) module is disabled.
In addition, if the passenger air bag deactivation switch setting is switched while ignition is “ON”, SDM does not store any DTC and does not turn on the “AIR BAG” warning light.
WARNING:
•If the passenger air bag deactivation switch is in the “Air bag ON” position when the child restraint is in use, death or serious injury to the child may result due to deployment of the passenger air bag.
Set the passenger air bag deactivation switch to the “Air bag OFF” position when using the child restraint installed in the front passenger seat.
•If the passenger air bag deactivation switch is in the “Air bag OFF” position when the child restraint is not in use, death or serious injury to the passenger may result due to non-activation of the passenger air bag.
Set the passenger air bag deactivation switch to the “Air bag ON” position when there is no child restraint installed on the front passenger seat.

Enable Mode
When ignition is set to “ON”, both “PASSENGER AIR BAG ON” indicator (2) and “PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF” indicator (3) light up for a few seconds and then go out. However, if passenger air bag deactivation switch (1) is set to “ON” position (passenger air bag is activated: contact point closed), the passenger air bag activation indicator “PASSENGER AIR BAG ON” (“ON” lamp) lights up for about 1 minute and then goes out. In the enable mode, the air bag system is controlled in the usual manner.
Disable Mode
When ignition is set to “ON”, both “PASSENGER AIR BAG ON” indicator and “PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF” indicator light up for a few seconds and then go out. However, if passenger air bag deactivation switch is set to “OFF” position (passenger air bag is deactivated: contact point opened), the passenger air bag activation indicator “PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF” (“OFF” lamp) lights up and stays on. In the disable mode, the passenger air bag (inflator) module (5) is always disabled.
Fail-Safe Operation
When a trouble occurs in the passenger air bag deactivation switch and SDM (4) cannot judge the trouble condition of the switch, SDM turns on “AIR BAG” warning light to warn occurrence of an abnormal condition. The operation mode of the passenger air bag (inflator) module depends on the condition when the trouble occurred.
