DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING

POWER LIFTGATE SYSTEM

In order to obtain conclusive testing of the power liftgate system, the Controller Area Network (CAN) data bus, and all of the electronic modules that provide inputs to, or receive outputs from the power liftgate system components must be checked. Any diagnosis of the power liftgate system should begin with, the use of a scan tool and the appropriate diagnostic service information.

Refer to the appropriate wiring information for complete circuit schematic or connector pin-out information.

NOTE: Before any testing of the power liftgate system is attempted, the battery should be fully-charged.

Following are quick reference diagnostic tables to help when diagnosing and testing the power liftgate system.

  • Using the scan tool, perform the "Latch Home Position Test"
  • If the "Latch Home Position Test" is unsuccessful, disconnect the battery for 60 seconds. Reconnect the battery and grab the outside handle switch and hold it for at least 20 seconds
  • If the latch still will not release, use the scan tool and select "Actuates", "Latch Motor Release Direction". This will drive the motor longer than just using the outside handle switch
  • If driving the latch by the "Latch Motor Release Direction" worked, perform the "Latch Home Position Test" before returning the vehicle back to the owner. If driving the latch by the "Latch Motor Release Direction" did not work, use the following procedure to open the liftgate and continue diagnosis as necessary. (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/POWER DOORS - STANDARD PROCEDURE - MANUAL LATCH RELEASE) to open the liftgate
 
  Latch not “Home”
 
Check latch sector switch circuit and attempt to “Home” latch with scan tool
 
  Failure of outside handle switch
 
Check for diagnostic trouble codes and cycle with scan tool
 
  Failure of power liftgate control module

POWER LIFTGATE SYSTEM INHIBITORS

The power liftgate system is designed with a number of system inhibitors. These inhibitors are necessary for safety and feasibility of the power liftgate system. Refer to power liftgate system inhibitors noted below:

  • The Power Liftgate module will inhibit operation of the power liftgate in extreme temperatures. These temperatures will be approximately -22° F (-33° C) and 149° F (65° C). The thermistor assembly on the liftgate monitors the temperature.
  • The vehicle's transmission must be in park or neutral for the power liftgate to operate.
  • The vehicle's speed must be zero for the power liftgate to operate.
  • The vehicle's electrical system voltage must be within specification for the power liftgate system to operate. A low-voltage cut-off is built into the power liftgate system to prevent the vehicle's battery from discharging to the point were the vehicle cannot be operated.
  • If the vehicle's ignition switch is in the “START” position, the power liftgate will pause.
  • If multiple obstacles are detected during the same power open or close cycle, the liftgate will abort that power cycle and go into full manual operation.
  • If severe Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) are stored in the power liftgate control module the system may not operate.

Allow vehicle to sit in a constant temperature environment for one hour with the liftgate open. Check the power liftgate control module temperature reading using a scan tool. If the reading is greater than 4.5°C (8°F) off, measure the resistance of the thermistor and compare the values with those in the thermistor section, (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/POWER DOORS/ACTUATOR - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING). If the resistance is OK, replace the power liftgate control module
 
$85 OPEN INHIBIT - TEMPERATURE TOO HIGH

If the resistance is OK, replace the power liftgate control module
 
$88 CLOSE INHIBIT - LEFT PINCH SENSOR ACTIVE
 
Pinch was activated prior to activation of power close cycle
 
Inform customer of pinch sensor operation
 
    Check for obstructions causing pinch sensor activation. Repair as necessary
 
  Short to ground on left pinch sensor signal circuit
 
Check signal circuit and repair as necessary
 
  Inoperative left pinch sensor
 
Measure the resistance of the left pinch sensor in an unpinched state. If the resistance is less than 9k ohms, replace the left pinch sensor

Use a scan tool to observe the voltage of the left pinch sensor with the sensor unplugged. The reading should be approximately 5V. Short the pinch sensor circuit to ground and recheck the scan tool reading. The reading should be approximately 0V. If the readings are NOT OK, replace the inoperative power liftgate control module
 
$89 CLOSE INHIBIT - RIGHT PINCH SENSOR ACTIVE

Using a scan tool, perform the power liftgate control module learn cycle, (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/POWER DOORS - STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWER LIFTGATE CONTROL MODULE LEARN CYCLE). If learn cycle does not correct the problem replace the power liftgate control module
 
$91 CLOSE INHIBIT - IN-PLANT MODE
 
Power Close will not function because the power liftgate control module is in the In-Plant mode
 
Using a scan tool, perform the power liftgate control module learn cycle, (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/POWER DOORS - STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWER LIFTGATE CONTROL MODULE LEARN CYCLE). If learn cycle does not correct the problem replace the power liftgate control module
 
$92 OPEN INHIBIT - GEAR/SPEED MISMATCH
 
Power Open will not function because of a conflict between the PRNDL and vehicle speed inputs
 
Using a scan tool observe the Bussed inputs to the power liftgate control module. Verify vehicle speed reads correctly. If NOT OK, verify proper operation of the vehicle speed sensor, repair as necessary.
 
    Using a scan tool observe the Bussed inputs to the power liftgate control module. Verify PRNDL status reads correctly. If NOT OK, verify proper operation of the transmission range sensor, repair as necessary.
 
    Verify the ignition switch status reads correctly using a scan tool. Repair as necessary
 
    The inhibitor could have been operator induced by placing the transmission in Park when the vehicle is still rolling and immediately attempting an Open liftgate command
 
$93 CLOSE INHIBIT - GEAR/SPEED MISMATCH
 
Power Close will not function because of a conflict between the PRNDL and vehicle speed inputs
 
Using a scan tool observe the Bussed inputs to the power liftgate control module. Verify vehicle speed reads correctly. If NOT OK, verify proper operation of the vehicle speed sensor, repair as necessary.
 
    Using a scan tool observe the Bussed inputs to the power liftgate control module. Verify PRNDL status reads correctly. If NOT OK, verify proper operation of the transmission range sensor, repair as necessary.
 
    Verify the ignition switch status reads correctly using a scan tool. Repair as necessary

$94 OPEN INHIBIT - NOT FULLY OPEN OR FULLY CLOSED
 
Operator induced by placing the liftgate in the primary or secondary latch position when the liftgate was open
 
Inform customer of proper power liftgate/latch operation
 
  Conflict in liftgate latch switches and full open switch
 
Using a scan tool, observe the liftgate latch “Full Open, Primary, Secondary, Sector and Paw” switch readings with the liftgate in the fully open position. Verify that the “Full Open, Primary, Secondary and Paw” readings are all “Closed” and the “Sector” reading is “Open”. Repair as necessary
 
    Using a scan tool, observe the liftgate latch “Full Open, Primary, Secondary, Sector and Paw” switch readings with the liftgate in the fully closed position. Verify that the “Full Open, Primary, Secondary, Sector and Paw” readings are all “Open”. Repair as necessary
 
  Full open switch
 
Using a scan tool, verify proper operation of the full open switch during a power liftgate cycle. Switch reading should be “closed” with the liftgate a few degrees below fully opened and “open” in all other positions. Repair as necessary
 
    Using a scan tool, verify proper operation of the full open switch during a manual liftgate cycle. Switch reading should be “closed” with the liftgate a few degrees below fully opened and “open” in all other positions. Repair as necessary
 
$95 LATCH RELEASE INHIBIT - LOCK ENGAGED
 
Vehicle was locked when the operator attempted to release the liftgate latch using the exterior handle switch
 
Inform customer of proper power liftgate/latch operation
 
  Invalid lock status received by the power liftgate control module

Operator induced by placing the liftgate in the primary or secondary latch position when the liftgate was open

Using a scan tool, verify that the position sensor 1 and 2 toggle between “Open” and “Closed”. If readings are inaccurate, diagnose the wiring for possible opens, or shorts to ground/voltage. Repair as necessary
 
  Power liftgate drive unit position sensor
 
Manually open the liftgate to the fully open position. Bring the liftgate down to just before the latch contacts the striker. Using a scan tool, observe the “gate position counts”. If the count is greater than 20, replace the inoperative power liftgate drive unit
 
  Power liftgate control module
 
Using a scan tool, observe the position sensor 1 and 2 status. Disconnect the power liftgate drive unit electrical connector. Apply opens and grounds to the position sensor signal circuits. Verify the power liftgate control module reads the correct “Open/Closed” status. If readings are NOT OK, replace the power liftgate control module
 
$AB OPEN INHIBIT - VTA ARMED
 
The overhead console liftgate switch would not initiate a “power open” cycle because the Vehicle Theft Alarm (VTA) was armed
