BALANCE SHAFT MODULE
DESCRIPTION
The balance shaft is gear-driven and is used to counteract engine vibration and roughness. The balance shaft assembly includes balancers on two shafts. It is only serviced as an assembly. Balance shafts must be timed to the crankshaft.
REMOVAL

1. Disconnect the battery.
2. Drain the engine oil
3. Install the TDC locking tool.

4. Remove the lower oil pan.

5. Remove the upper oil pan.
6. Remove the oil pickup tube.

7. Place a dowel rod through the holes in the balance shaft axles to keep the balance shafts in the correct position for reassembly.

8. Remove the balance shaft housing.
INSTALLATION

1. Place a dowel rod through the holes in the balance shaft axles to keep the balance shafts in the correct position for reassembly.

2. Install the balance shaft housing.

3. Use torque sequence in the graphic to torque the balance shaft bolts to 33 Nm (24 lbs. ft.).

4. Install the upper oil pan gasket.

5. Install the oil pickup tube.
6. Install the upper oil pan.

7. Use the illustrated torque sequence and torque the M6 bolts to 15 Nm (132 lbs. in.).
8. Torque the M8 bolts to 33 Nm (23 lbs. ft.)
9. Turn all of the upper oil pan bolts an additional 90°.

10. Install bolts 1 and 2 into the lower oil pan and torque to 15 Nm (133 lbs. in.)..
11. Install the remaining bolts in the sequence illustrated.
12. Torque the oil pan bolts in sequence to 15 Nm (133 lbs. in.).
13. Loosen each bolt 90° and use the illustrated sequence to torque the bolts to 15 Nm (133 lbs. in.).

14. Fill the engine oil.
15. Remove the TDC locking tool.
16. Reconnect the battery.
