SHAFT-BALANCE

DESCRIPTION



The 2.8L Common Rail Diesel engine is equipped with two gear driven nodular cast iron balance shafts in a cast aluminum carrier. The balance shaft assembly is gear driven by the crankshaft and used to counteract engine vibration.



The balance shafts are driven by a gear (2) on the crankshaft (1). The balance shafts must be timed to the engine during the engine timing procedure.

REMOVAL




1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Install the crankshaft locking tool.



3. Remove the lower oil pan.



4. Remove the upper oil pan.
5. Remove the pickup tube.



6. Place a dowel rod (1) through the holes in the end of the balance shaft axles.
7. Remove the balance shaft assembly.

INSTALLATION



NOTE: Before installation of the balance shaft assembly, the crankshaft locking tool must be installed.


1. Remove the vibration damper and roll engine over by hand until the witness line on the front of the crankshaft hub lines up with the mark on the front cover. Once the crankshaft locking tool is installed the balance shaft assembly can be installed.



2. With balance shaft assembly on work bench. Insert a dowel into the holes in the balance shaft assembly. This will ensure proper balance shaft to crankshaft timing after assembly.


Torque the balance shaft carrier bolts in the torque sequence illustrated. Torque the bolts to 32 Nm (23 lbs. ft.)..
3. Install oil pump pickup tube with new seals
(Refer to 9 - ENGINE/LUBRICATION/OIL PUMP - INSTALLATION) .
4. Install oil pan (Refer to 9 - ENGINE/LUBRICATION/OIL PAN - INSTALLATION) .
5. Refill engine oil to proper level.
6. Connect negative battery cable.
