P2100-ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL MOTOR CIRCUIT OPEN

P2100-ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL MOTOR CIRCUIT OPEN

For a complete wiring diagram, refer to the Wiring Information.

Theory of Operation

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Air Flow Control Valve is an electrically operated throttle valve motor used to assist the EGR system function by creating a vacuum in the intake system to draw exhaust gas into the intake manifold. The Solenoid receives 12 Volts from the ASD relay and is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). With the solenoid de-energized (off) the throttle valve is in the open (full flow) position. When the PCM energizes (grounds) the throttle motor, the throttle valve closes creating a low pressure (vacuum) in the intake system. This low pressure effect helps draw exhaust gases from the EGR Valve into the intake system. When this DTC is active, the EGR System and DPF regeneration is disabled.

Possible Causes

(F344) ASD RELAY OUTPUT CIRCUIT OPEN
(K312) EGR AIR FLOW CONTROL VALVE CONTROL CIRCUIT OPEN
EGR AIR FLOW CONTROL VALVE
POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)

Always perform the Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting procedure before proceeding. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM) - Standard Procedure).

1. CHECK FOR ACTIVE DTC

1. Turn the ignition on.
2. Using the scan tool, erase PCM DTCs.
3. Perform several ignition cycles, turning the ignition off for at least 10 seconds between each ignition cycle.
4. Using the scan tool, view PCM DTCs.

Did this DTC return?

Yes

No

2. CHECK THE (F344) ASD RELAY OUTPUT CIRCUIT OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE

1. Turn the ignition off.
2. Disconnect the EGR Air Flow Control Valve harness connector.
3. Turn the ignition on.
4. Using a 12-volt test light connected to ground, check the (F344) PCM Relay Output circuit at the EGR Air Flow Control Valve harness connector.

Does the test light illuminate brightly?

Yes

No

3. CHECK THE (K312) EGR AIR FLOW CONTROL VALVE CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE

1. Turn the ignition off.
2. Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
3. Measure the resistance of the (K312) EGR Air Flow Control Valve Control circuit between the EGR Air Flow Control Valve harness connector and the PCM C1 harness connector.

Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?

Yes

No

4. EGR AIR FLOW CONTROL VALVE

1. Reconnect the EGR Air Flow Control Valve harness connector.
2. Reconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
3. Turn the ignition on.
4. Using the scan tool, erase PCM DTCs.
5. Turn the ignition off.
6. Disconnect the EGR Air Flow Control Valve harness connector.
7. Connect a jumper between ground and the (K312) EGR Air Flow Control Valve Control circuit.
8. Turn the ignition on.
9. Using the scan tool, view PCM DTCs.

Did the P2102-ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL MOTOR CIRCUIT LOW DTC set as active with the jumper in place?

Yes

No
