P2103-ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL MOTOR HIGH

P2103-ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL MOTOR HIGH

For a complete wiring diagram, refer to the Wiring Information.

Theory of Operation

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Air Flow Control Valve is an electrically operated throttle valve motor used to assist the EGR system function by creating a vacuum in the intake system to draw exhaust gas into the intake manifold. The Solenoid receives 12 Volts from the ASD relay and is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). With the solenoid de-energized (off) the throttle valve is in the open (full flow) position. When the PCM energizes (grounds) the throttle motor, the throttle valve closes creating a low pressure (vacuum) in the intake system. This low pressure effect helps draw exhaust gases from the EGR Valve into the intake system.

Possible Causes

(K312) EGR AIR FLOW CONTROL VALVE CONTROL SHORTED TO VOLTAGE
(K312) EGR AIR FLOW CONTROL VALVE CONTROL SHORTED TO THE (F344) ASD RELAY OUTPUT CIRCUIT
(Z904) GROUND CIRCUIT OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
EGR AIR FLOW CONTROL VALVE
POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)

Always perform the Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting procedure before proceeding. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM) - Standard Procedure).

1. CHECK FOR ACTIVE DTC

1. Turn the ignition on.
2. Using the scan tool, erase PCM DTCs.
3. Test drive the vehicle and monitor the scan tool for PCM DTCs.

Did this DTC return?

Yes

No

2. EGR AIR FLOW CONTROL VALVE

1. Turn the ignition off.
2. Disconnect the EGR Air Flow Control Valve harness connector.
3. Turn the ignition on.
4. Using the scan tool, erase PCM DTCs.
5. Using the scan tool, view PCM DTCs.

Did the P2100-ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL MOTOR CIRCUIT OPEN DTC set as active with the connector unplugged?

Yes

No

3. CHECK THE (Z904) GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE

1. Using a 12-volt test light connected to 12 Volts, check the (Z904) Ground circuit at the EGR Air Flow Control Valve harness connector.

Does the test light illuminate brightly?

Yes

No

4. CHECK FOR THE (K312) EGR AIR FLOW CONTROL VALVE CONTROL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO THE (F344) ASD RELAY OUTPUT CIRCUIT

1. Turn the ignition off.
2. Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
3. Measure the resistance between the (K312) EGR Air Flow Control Valve Control circuit and the (F344) ASD Relay Output circuit at the EGR Air Flow Control Valve harness connector.

Is the resistance above 10k Ohms?

Yes

No

5. CHECK THE (K312) EGR AIR FLOW CONTROL VALVE CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

1. Remove the ASD Relay from the TIPM.
2. Connect a jumper wire between cavity 30 and cavity 87 of the ASD Relay connector.
3. Turn the ignition on.
4. Measure the voltage of the (K312) EGR Air Flow Control Valve Control circuit at the EGR Air Flow Control Valve harness connector.

Is there any voltage present?

Yes

No
