P245B-EGR COOLER BYPASS CONTROL CIRCUIT PERFORMANCE

P245B-EGR COOLER BYPASS CONTROL CIRCUIT PERFORMANCE

For a complete wiring diagram, refer to the Wiring Information.

Theory of Operation

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Cooler Bypass Valve Actuator is used to redirect the EGR gases around the cooler when the engine is under certain operating conditions. The EGR Cooler Bypass Valve Actuator is an electronic actuator that controls vacuum supply to the EGR Cooler. It is located underneath the Intake Manifold Assembly. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) will light a MIL lamp after this monitor runs and fails in two consecutive drive cycles. The PCM will turn off the MIL lamp after the diagnostic passes in four consecutive drive cycles.

Possible Causes

HIGH RESISTANCE IN THE (K670) EGR COOLER BYPASS VALVE ACTUATOR CONTROL CIRCUIT
EGR COOLER FOULED
EGR COOLER BYPASS VALVE VACUUM SUPPLY
POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)

Always perform the Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting procedure before proceeding. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM) - Standard Procedure).

1. ACTIVE DTC

1. Turn the ignition on.
2. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
3. Start the engine and test drive the vehicle.
4. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

Did the DTC return?

Yes

No

2. CHECK FOR HIGH RESISTANCE IN THE (K670) EGR COOLER BYPASS VALVE ACTUATOR CONTROL CIRCUIT

1. Turn the ignition off.
2. Disconnect the EGR Cooler Bypass Valve harness connector.
3. Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
4. Measure the resistance of the (K670) EGR Cooler Bypass Valve Actuator Control circuit between the EGR Cooler Bypass Valve Actuator harness connector and the PCM C1 harness connector.

Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?

Yes

No

3. EGR COOLER BYPASS VALVE ACTUATOR

1. Replace the EGR Cooler Bypass Valve Actuator.
2. Turn the ignition on.
3. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
4. Start the engine and test drive the vehicle.
5. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

Did the DTC return?

Yes

No

4. POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE

1. Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the Oxygen Sensor and the Powertrain Control Module.
2. Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires.
3. Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals.
4. Refer to any Technical Service Bulletins that may apply.

Were any problems found?

Yes

No
