P245C-EGR COOLER BYPASS CONTROL CIRCUIT LOW

P245C-EGR COOLER BYPASS CONTROL CIRCUIT LOW

For a complete wiring diagram, refer to the Wiring Information.

Theory of Operation

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Cooler Bypass Valve Actuator is used to redirect the EGR gases around the cooler when the engine is under certain operating conditions. The EGR Cooler Bypass Valve Actuator is an electronic actuator that controls vacuum supply to the EGR Cooler. It is located underneath the Intake Manifold Assembly. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) will light a MIL lamp after this monitor runs and fails in two consecutive drive cycles. The PCM will turn off the MIL lamp after the diagnostic passes in four consecutive drive cycles.

Possible Causes

(K670) EGR COOLER BYPASS VALVE ACTUATOR CONTROL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND
EGR COOLER BYPASS VALVE
POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)

Always perform the Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting procedure before proceeding. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM) - Standard Procedure).

1. ACTIVE DTC

1. Turn the ignition on.
2. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

Is the DTC active?

Yes

No

2. CHECK THE (K670) EGR COOLER BYPASS VALVE ACTUATOR CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

1. Turn the ignition off.
2. Disconnect the EGR Cooler Bypass Valve Actuator harness connector.
3. Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
4. Measure the resistance between ground and the (K670) EGR Cooler Bypass Valve Actuator Control circuit at the EGR Cooler Bypass Valve harness connector.

Is the resistance below 10k Ohms?

Yes

No

3. EGR COOLER BYPASS VALVE ACTUATOR

1. Reconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
2. Turn the ignition on.
3. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

NOTE: The P245A-EGR COOLER BYPASS CONTROL CIRCUIT OPEN DTC should set as active or pending with the connector unplugged.

Did the DTC set as described above?

Yes

No

4. POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE

1. Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the Oxygen Sensor and the Powertrain Control Module.
2. Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires.
3. Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals.
4. Refer to any Technical Service Bulletins that may apply.

Were any problems found?

Yes

No
