GENERATOR

DESCRIPTION

The generator is belt-driven by the engine using a serpentine type drive belt. It is serviced only as a complete assembly. If the generator fails for any reason, the entire assembly must be replaced.

OPERATION

OPERATION

As the energized rotor begins to rotate within the generator, the spinning magnetic field induces a current into the windings of the stator coil. Once the generator begins producing sufficient current, it also provides the current needed to energize the rotor.

The Y type stator winding connections deliver the induced AC current to 3 positive and 3 negative diodes for rectification. From the diodes, rectified DC current is delivered to the vehicle electrical system through the generator battery terminal.

Although the generators appear the same externally, different generators with different output ratings are used on this vehicle. Be certain that the replacement generator has the same output rating and part number as the original unit. Refer to Generator Ratings in the Specifications section at the back of this group for amperage ratings and part numbers.

Noise emitting from the generator may be caused by: worn, loose or defective bearings; a loose or defective drive pulley; incorrect, worn, damaged or misadjusted fan drive belt; loose mounting bolts; a misaligned drive pulley or a defective stator or diode.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable at battery.

  2. Disconnect the field wire connector (2) at side of generator by pushing on connector tab.

  3. Remove the B+ cable output terminal mounting nut (1). Disconnect terminal from generator.

  4. Remove the serpentine belt (Refer to 07 - Cooling/Accessory Drive/BELT, Serpentine - Removal) .

  5. Remove the two upper generator mounting bolts (1).

  6. Remove the two lower generator mounting bolts (2).

  7. Remove the generator from the vehicle.

  1. Open the hood.

  2. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.

  3. Remove the engine cover (1).

    4.  
  4. Remove the air cleaner body (1) (Refer to 09 - Engine/Air Intake System/BODY, Air Cleaner - Removal) .

  5. Position aside the serpentine belt (Refer to 07 - Cooling/Accessory Drive/BELT, Serpentine - Removal) .

  6. Remove the generator electrical connector (2) and the B+ battery stud cover (1).

  7. Remove the B+ retainer (1) and position aside the B+ cable.

  8. Remove the generator mounting retainers (1).

  1. Position the generator to engine. Install two upper mounting bolts (1).

  2. Install the two lower mounting bolts (2).

  3. Install the serpentine belt (Refer to 07 - Cooling/Accessory Drive/BELT, Serpentine - Installation) .

  4. Snap field wire connector (2) into generator.

  5. Install the negative battery cable to battery.

  1. Install the generator into the vehicle.

  2. Install the generator mounting retainers (1). Tighten to the top retainers to 54 N·m (43 ft. lbs.) Tighten to the bottom retainers to 30 N·m (22 ft. lbs.)

  3. Position back the B+ cable onto the generator stud.

  4. Install the B+ retainer (1). Tighten to 18 N·m (13 ft. lbs)

  5. Install the generator electrical connector (2) and install the B+ battery stud cover (1).

  6. Install the serpentine belt (Refer to 07 - Cooling/Accessory Drive/BELT, Serpentine - Installation) .

  7. Install the air cleaner body (1) (Refer to 09 - Engine/Air Intake System/AIR CLEANER - Installation) .

  8. Install the engine cover.

  9. Connect the negative battery cable.

  10. Close the hood.
