SOLENOID, Evaporative Emissions Purge

DESCRIPTION

The EVAP canister purge solenoid (1) is located in the engine compartment attached to the battery tray.

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) operates the EVAP canister purge solenoid depending upon engine operating conditions.

OPERATION

OPERATION

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) operates the solenoid.

During the cold start warm-up period and the hot start time delay, the PCM does not energize the solenoid. When de-energized, no vapors are purged. The PCM de-energizes the solenoid during open loop operation.

The engine enters closed loop operation after it reaches a specified temperature and the time delay ends. During closed loop operation, the PCM energizes and de-energizes the solenoid 5 or 10 times per second, depending upon operating conditions. The PCM varies the vapor flow rate by changing solenoid pulse width. Pulse width is the amount of time the solenoid energizes. The PCM adjusts solenoid pulse width based on engine operating condition.

REMOVAL

  1. Lift the EVAP solenoid assembly (1) from the tongue-type bracket on the battery tray.

  2. Disconnect the electrical connector (2).

  3. Disconnect the quick-connect fittings (3 and 4) from the EVAP solenoid (Refer to 14 - Fuel System/Fuel Delivery/FITTING, Quick Connect - Standard Procedure) .

INSTALLATION

  1. Connect the quick-connect fittings (3 and 4) to the EVAP solenoid (1) (Refer to 14 - Fuel System/Fuel Delivery/FITTING, Quick Connect - Standard Procedure) .

  2. Connect the electrical connector (2).

  3. Push the EVAP solenoid assembly onto the tongue-type bracket.

NOTE:

The vapor/vacuum lines and hoses must be firmly connected. Also check the vapor/vacuum lines at the ESIM switch and filter for damage or leaks. If a leak is present, a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) may be set.
