NOTE:

Some early built right hand drive vehicles may have a damper with the mounting stud on the damper instead of on the bracket. If the mounting stud is on the damper, the damper and link bracket must be replaced as a kit, and the replacement damper will be different.


NOTE:

Left hand drive shown, right hand drive similar.


  1. Place the front wheels in a straight ahead position.

    2.  
  2. Raise and support the vehicle (Refer to 04 - Vehicle Quick Reference/Hoisting - Standard Procedure) .

    3.  
  3. Remove the steering damper retaining nut (3) from the link bracket (4).

    4.  
  4. Remove the steering damper retaining nut and bolt (1) from the axle bracket.

    5.  
  5. Remove the steering damper (2) from the vehicle.

  1. Place the front wheels in a straight ahead position.

  2. Raise and support the vehicle (Refer to 04 - Vehicle Quick Reference/Hoisting - Standard Procedure) .

  3. Remove the damper (2) (Refer to 19 - Steering/Linkage/DAMPER, Steering - Removal) .

  4. Remove the nut and bolt (5) from the linkage bracket (4).

    NOTE:

    It may be necessary to spread the bracket to fit over the tube.

  5. Slide the bracket (4) to the tie rod tube end and remove from tie rod tube.

NOTE:

  1. Position the steering damper (2) to the axle bracket and link bracket (4).

    2.  
  2. Install the steering damper bolt and nut (1) in the axle bracket and tighten to 68 N·m (50 ft. lbs.).

  3. Install the steering damper nut (3) on the link bracket (4) and tighten to 68 N·m (50 ft. lbs.).

  4. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.

NOTE:

Some early built right hand drive vehicles may have a damper with the mounting stud on the damper instead of on the bracket. If the mounting stud is on the damper, the damper and link bracket must be replaced as a kit, and the replacement damper will be different.


  1. Normalize the tie rod end by verifying that the lower surface of the outer tie rod socket (2) is parallel to the upper surface of the knuckle (1). Rotate the tie rod tube until joint to knuckle is parallel.

    NOTE:

    It may be necessary to spread the damper bracket to fit over the tie rod tube.

  2. Slide the bracket over the tie rod tube end and down the tube so the damper retaining stud is pointing to the rear of the vehicle and is below the tie rod tube.

  3. Compress the bracket as necessary to install the bracket retaining bolt and nut. Do not tighten at this time.

  4. LHD only, position the damper bracket (2) so the edge of the damper bracket (4) is 502.24 mm (19.75 in.) from the tie rod tube end (5). Tighten the bracket retaining nut (3) just enough so it will still turn without turning the tie rod tube (1).

  5. RHD only, position the damper bracket (1) so the bracket edge (4) is 419.23 mm (16.5 in.) from the tie rod tube end (3). Tighten the damper bracket retaining bolt (5) just enough so it will still turn without turning the tie rod tube (2).


    NOTE:

    LHD shown, RHD similar.

  6. Rotate the bracket (1) into position so that the bracket retaining bolt is parallel to the ground and tighten the bracket retaining nut (2) to 50 N·m (37 ft. lbs.)

  7. Verify the measurement between the bracket edge and the end of the tie rod end is still as specified in the previous steps, and that the bracket retaining bolt is still parallel.

  8. Install the damper (Refer to 19 - Steering/Linkage/DAMPER, Steering - Installation) .
