P0501-VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR 1 PERFORMANCE

When Monitored:
With the engine running, transmission not in park or neutral, brakes not applied, and engine RPM greater than 1500.

Set Condition:
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) receives a CAN message that the vehicle speed signal is implausible or incorrect.
Possible Causes |

Always perform the Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting procedure before proceeding. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM) - Standard Procedure).
| NOTE: | Before continuing with this test, diagnose any Transmission Module DTCs related to the vehicle speed, or any CAN BUS Communication DTCs that are present. |
| 1. | With a scan tool, erase the DTCs. |
| 2. | Test drive the vehicle. |
| 3. | With a scan tool, check for active DTCs. |
Is the DTC Active or Pending at this time?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM) - Standard Procedure).
| 1. | Turn the ignition off. |
| 2. | Check the tire sizes to ensure that they are all the same. |
| 3. | Check the tires for excessive wear and proper tire pressure. |
| NOTE: | This code can set due to the front or rear wheels being on a slippery surface while the opposite tires are not. |
| 4. | Notify the customer and ask what the road and driving conditions were like when the fault set. |
Were any problems found?
Yes
- Repair as necessary. If the code set during a front OR rear wheel spin condition, no repair is necessary.
- Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM) - Standard Procedure).
No
- Go To 3
| 1. | Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires. |
| 2. | Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals. |
| 3. | Perform any Technical Service Bulletins that may apply. |
Were any problems found?
Yes
- Repair as necessary.
- Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM) - Standard Procedure).
No
- Replace the Powertrain Control Module in accordance with the service information.
- Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM) - Standard Procedure).
