Theory of Operation
The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Cooler Bypass Valve Actuator is used to redirect the EGR gases around the cooler when the engine is under certain operating conditions. The EGR Cooler Bypass Valve Actuator is an electronic actuator that controls vacuum supply to the EGR Cooler. It is located underneath the Intake Manifold Assembly. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) will light a MIL lamp after this monitor runs and fails in two consecutive drive cycles. The PCM will turn off the MIL lamp after the diagnostic passes in four consecutive drive cycles.

When Monitored:
With the ignition on.

Set Condition:
The PCM detects that the EGR Cooler Bypass Valve Actuator Control circuit is open for 0.5 second.

Always perform the Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting procedure before proceeding. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM) - Standard Procedure).
| 1. | Turn the ignition on. |
| 2. | With the scan tool, read DTCs. |
Is the DTC active?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT DTC diagnostic procedure. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM) - Standard Procedure).
2. CHECK THE (F344) ASD RELAY OUTPUT CIRCUIT VOLTAGE

| 1. | Turn the ignition off. |
| 2. | Disconnect the EGR Cooler Bypass Valve Actuator harness connector. |
| 3. | Turn the ignition on. |
| 4. | Measure the voltage on the (F344) ASD Relay Output circuit at the EGR Cooler Bypass Valve Actuator harness connector. |
Is the voltage equal to battery voltage?
Yes
- Go To 3
No
- Repair the (F344) ASD Relay Output circuit for an open or short to ground.

Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM)
- Standard Procedure).
3. CHECK THE (K670) EGR COOLER BYPASS VALVE ACTUATOR CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE

| 1. | Turn the ignition off. |
| 2. | Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector. |
| 3. | Measure the resistance of the (K670) EGR Cooler Bypass Valve Actuator Control circuit between the EGR Cooler Bypass Valve Actuator harness connector and the PCM C1 harness connector. |
Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 4
No
- Repair the (K670) EGR Cooler Bypass Valve Actuator Control circuit for an open or high resistance.

Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM)
- Standard Procedure).
4. EGR COOLER BYPASS VALVE ACTUATOR
| 1. | Turn the ignition off. |
| 2. | Disconnect the EGR Cooler Bypass Valve Actuator harness connector. |
| 3. | Connect a jumper between ground and the (K670) EGR Cooler Bypass Valve Actuator Control circuit at the EGR Cooler Bypass Valve Actuator harness connector. |
| 4. | Turn the ignition on. |
| 5. | With the scan tool, view DTCs. |
Did the P245C-EGR COOLER BYPASS CONTROL CIRCUIT LOW DTC set as active with the jumper in place?
Yes
- Replace the EGR Cooler Bypass Valve Actuator in accordance with the service information.
- Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM) - Standard Procedure).
No
- Go To 5
| 1. | Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the Oxygen Sensor and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). |
| 2. | Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires. |
| 3. | Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals. |
| 4. | Perform any Technical Service Bulletins that may apply. |
Were any problems found?
Yes
- Repair as necessary.
- Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM) - Standard Procedure).
No
- Replace the Powertrain Control Module in accordance with the service information.
- Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM) - Standard Procedure).
