PULLEY, Idler

3.6L

NOTE:

The bolts used to fasten the idler pulleys to the engine are different lengths. The left side idler bolt (3) is longer than the right side idler bolt (4).

  1. Remove accessory drive belt and position aside.

  2. Remove the bolt (3 and 4) from its respective idler pulley (1 and 2).

  3. Remove the idler from the engine.

CAUTION:

The retaining bolts on the idler pulleys are left hand thread.

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable.

    2.  
  2. Remove the serpentine belt (Refer to 07 - Cooling/Accessory Drive/BELT, Serpentine - Removal) .

  3. Remove bolt and the upper idler pulley (4).

  4. Remove bolt and the lower idler pulley (2).

NOTE:

  1. Install idler pulley (1 and 2) with there respective pulley bolt (3 and 4). Tighten bolt to 61 N·m (45 ft. lbs.) torque.

    CAUTION:

    When installing the accessory drive belt, the belt MUST be routed correctly. If not, the engine may overheat due to the water pump rotating in the wrong direction.

    WARNING:

    A slow and steady application of force and motion is required when compressing the belt tensioner strut. Any aggressive application of force will result in damage to the strut

  1. Install lower idler pulley (2). Tighten bolt to 45 N·m (33 ft. lbs.).

  2. Install the upper idler pulley (4). Tighten bolt to 45 N·m (33 ft. lbs.).

  3. Install the serpentine belt (1) (Refer to 07 - Cooling/Accessory Drive/BELT, Serpentine - Installation) .
