TENSIONER, Belt

3.6L

The automatic belt tensioner (1) is a hydraulically loaded arm and pulley assembly. The tensioner assembly is designed to apply constant pressure on the accessory drive belt to maintain proper belt tension.

The hydraulic strut (2) utilizes an internal spring and an one way valve that controls the oil pressure to the connecting rod. The valve allows the oil to build pressure in the piston to reduce the motion to the strut caused by the engines crank pulsations and allows for the proper tension to the accessory drive belt and pulleys.

The automatic belt tensioner (1) is a spring loaded arm and pulley assembly. The tensioner assembly is designed to apply constant pressure on the accessory drive belt to maintain proper belt tension.

The belt tensioner (1) is equipped with an alignment hole for installing a pin or rod (2). The belt tensioner (1) can be held in place to assist in the removal and installation of the accessory drive belt.

WARNING:

A slow and steady application of force and motion is required when compressing the belt tensioner strut. Any aggressive application of force will result in damage to the strut


  1. Remove accessory drive belt and position aside.

  2. Remove the hydraulic tensioner mounting bolt (4).

  3. Remove accessory drive belt tensioner mounting bolt (1).

  4. Remove accessory drive belt tensioner (2) from engine front cover .

WARNING:

Because of high spring tension, do not attempt to disassemble automatic tensioner. Unit is serviced as an assembly.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Remove accessory drive belt (1) (Refer to 07 - Cooling/Accessory Drive/BELT, Serpentine - Removal) .

  3. Remove bolt and the serpentine belt tensioner (2).

  1. Position the tensioner arm onto the engine front cover. Tighten bolt (1) to 33 N·m (24 ft. lbs.).

  2. Align the hydraulic belt tensioner strut to the engine front cover and install the bolt (4). Tighten bolt to 22.5 N·m (16.6 ft. lbs.).

  3. Install drive belt (Refer to 07 - Cooling/Accessory Drive/BELT, Serpentine - Installation) .

  1. Install serpentine belt tensioner (2). Tighten bolt (1) to 45 N·m (33 ft. lbs.).

  2. Install the accessory drive belt (1) (Refer to 07 - Cooling/Accessory Drive/BELT, Serpentine - Installation) .

  3. Connect the negative battery cable.
