CANISTER, Vapor

DESCRIPTION

The EVAP canister (1) is located under the vehicle next to the rear prop shaft. The ESIM switch (2) is attached to the EVAP canister.

OPERATION

The Evaporative System Vapor Canister is filled with granules of an activated carbon mixture. Fuel vapors entering the EVAP canister is absorbed by the charcoal granules.

Fuel tank pressure vents into the EVAP canister. Fuel vapors are temporarily held in the canister until they can be drawn into the intake manifold. The duty cycle EVAP canister purge solenoid allows the EVAP canister to be purged at predetermined times and at certain engine operating conditions.

REMOVAL

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.

  2. Raise and support the vehicle (Refer to 04 - Vehicle Quick Reference/Hoisting - Standard Procedure) .

  3. Clean the dirt or debris from the canister vacuum lines.

    4.  
  4. Disconnect the electrical connector (3) from the ESIM switch (4).

    5.  
  5. Disconnect the fresh air hose (5) from the ESIM switch (4).

    6.  
  6. Disconnect the fuel tank vapor line (1) and the engine vapor line (2) quick-connect fittings from the EVAP canister (Refer to 14 - Fuel System/Fuel Delivery/FITTING, Quick Connect - Standard Procedure) .

  7. Remove the nut and bolt (2), disengage the locators (3) and remove the EVAP canister (1) from the mounting bracket.

  8. If required, remove the ESIM switch (1) from the EVAP canister (3) (Refer to 25 - Emissions Control/Evaporative Emissions/SWITCH, Evaporative Emissions System Monitor - Removal) .

INSTALLATION

  1. If removed, install the ESIM switch (1) to the EVAP canister (3) (Refer to 25 - Emissions Control/Evaporative Emissions/SWITCH, Evaporative Emissions System Monitor - Installation) .

  2. Install the EVAP canister (1) to the mounting bracket, engage the locators (3), install the nut and bolt (2) and tighten to 14 N·m (10 ft. lbs.).

  3. Connect the fresh air hose (5) to the ESIM switch (4).

  4. Connect the electrical connector (3) to the ESIM switch (4).

  5. Connect the fuel tank vapor line (1) and the engine vapor line (2) quick-connect fittings to the EVAP canister (Refer to 14 - Fuel System/Fuel Delivery/FITTING, Quick Connect - Standard Procedure) .

  6. Lower the vehicle.

    NOTE:

    The vapor/vacuum lines and hoses must be firmly connected, If a leak is present, a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) may be set.

  7. Check the vapor/vacuum lines at the ESIM switch, EVAP canister and EVAP purge solenoid for damage or leaks.
